I've always wondered what the appropriate greeting should be during Lent. On Easter Sunday, the early church greeted one another with the exclamation, "The Lord is Risen!" and the response was, "The Lord is Risen Indeed!" This past Thanksgiving called us to enjoy time with friends and family and the greeting was often, "Happy Thanksgiving!" Then of course, Christmas was without apology, "Merry Christmas!" (My wife Ramona will not allow me to say "Happy Holidays... she has taken on a personal campaign to keep "Christmas" in the forefront of our greetings during December.)

 

But Lent...how do we greet one another during Lent? Lent has always been known as a time of contemplation, reflection, fasting, prayer, self-denial, and even penitence. So I did what I've always done since the invention of the internet and search engines... I "googled" greetings for Lent!


There were no well practiced greetings, but I did find the Orthodox Church's advice for a proper Lenten greeting:

 
"May you have a blessed, peaceful, and spiritually beneficial Great Lent, leading you to the Bright Pascha of the Lord!"  

 

Well, that certainly covers all the bases... I'm simply afraid that I won't be able to remember it all! I am beginning to think that as we approach Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten Season, my greeting won't be as important as my posture. Will I be in a posture of prayer? Will I faithfully study the scripture and reflect upon God's word? Will I consider fasting for one of my spiritual disciplines?


The Lenten Season is truly a time of preparation to embrace the power of the Resurrection. In the early church, it was a time to prepare for baptism and membership in the church. Lent then, was a time of readiness to claim Christ as Lord and to be marked as a faithful Disciple of Jesus Christ. And if marked as a Faithful Disciple, then called to enter into a Holy Lent and join the Fast. Isaiah calls us to a Fast with a servant response which truly foreshadows the coming of the Kingdom! 

 

Isaiah 58:6-9
"This is the kind of fast day I'm after:
to break the chains of injustice,
get rid of exploitation in the workplace,
free the oppressed, cancel debts.
What I'm interested in seeing you do is:
sharing your food with the hungry,
inviting the homeless poor into your homes,
putting clothes on the shivering ill-clad,
being available to your own families.
Do this and the lights will turn on,
and your lives will turn around at once.
Your righteousness will pave your way.
The God of glory will secure your passage.
Then when you pray, God will answer.
You'll call out for help and I'll say, 'Here I am.'"

  

May you enter into a Holy Lent and prepare to Keep the Fast~

New Church Development: A Farewell to Dave Elyea

It is often difficult to summarize the impact of one person's visionary leadership upon the Church. That being said, Dave Elyea has offered tremendous vision in the area of New Church Development at both the District and Conference levels over the past 16 years. Dave has offered his resignation from our District Committee on New Church Development effective February 2012, due to a recent move to the Tallahassee area to be closer to his family.  

 

While we are seeking new leadership for our District New Church Development Committee, Dave Elyea's legacy will forever provide a permanent footprint of church growth and expansion upon the East Central District and the Florida Conference.  We will forever be indebted to Dave for his servant leadership in the area of Church growth and evangelism for the sake of Christ and His Kingdom.

Mike Mailman: In his home church of Community Casselberry, Mike is the co-chair of their Community Reconciliation Ministry (CRM) and chair of their church council.  He, along with other specially trained clergy and laity, serve in their local congregations and on the EC District's Committee for Congregational Excellence where they provide conflict-coaching, mediation services and Peacemaker training for churches and individuals throughout the district. He is also a candidate pursing certification as a Christian Conciliator through Peacemaker Ministries (www.peacemaker.net). Lennie BurkeLennie Burke: Lennie is a member of the Peacemaking Team at Casselberry United Methodist Church. He has completed the Peacemaker's Conflict Coaching and Mediation Training. Lennie is certified by the Florida Supreme Court as a County Court mediator. He has had training in a variety of styles and applications of mediation and is a member of the Florida Academy of Professional Mediators and the Association for Conflict Resolution.

Lay Servant training prepares lay people to be in ministry through caring, communication and leadership. The key emphasis of the Lay Servant training is to equip people to teach, do visitation, lead committees and leadership teams, lead small group ministry and grow in personal understanding of God's call on their life.

Congregational Excellence: Excellent and Praiseworthy Ministry

"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things." --Philippians 4:8

 

At a recent Congregational Excellence Team meeting, members of our team shared some examples of "excellent and praiseworthy" ministry we have experienced here in our district.  In a time when it is easy to dwell on the negative, we want to focus our thoughts and attention on the positive. Some examples:

 

Community UMC in Casselberry led a dinner event benefiting homeless children from a local elementary school. What made it excellent? Music from children and adult choirs, participation from other churches and local police, a generous outpouring of gifts, and an ongoing relational ministry with a specific group of children.

 

A Central Florida Peacemaking network meeting. What made it excellent? The program included a judge, a pastor, a counselor, and a lawyer who were able to share real world examples of the difference peacemaking efforts can make in the world. Participants were inspired to continue to work to increase peacemaking efforts in our churches and communities.

 

First UMC Deland launched a "Mercy Hour" outreach that includes showers, food, and basic medical screening to homeless and indigent folks in their community. What makes it excellent? Prayer, planning, community involvement, worship, and the joy of volunteers.

 

United Methodist Men at Aloma UMC has a men's ministry initiative that seeks to build relationships through events and small groups. What makes it excellent? An intentional effort to invite friends and business associates, a generous free prime rib lunch (the women's ministry equivalent of this would be chocolate-just saying), and great follow-through opportunities for deeper discussion and spiritual growth.

 

Members of Pine Ridge Fellowship were challenged to match, dollar for dollar, the money they spent on themselves for Christmas with donations to a Haitian project benefitting orphans and rebuilding. What made it excellent? This event was steeped in prayer and worship. Folks donated over $8,600.00 and experienced spiritual growth. Sacrificial giving is a part of the culture of the church, which has also generously donated funds to a local school.

 

First UMC of Winter Park started a new ministry called Reclaiming Hope to provide spiritual, informational, and emotional support in challenging economic times. What makes it excellent? Lay and clergy leadership, personal testimonies, community involvement, and intentional relationship building between folks who are struggling and folks who feel called to help.

 

In short, excellence in ministry occurs when there is authentic transformation. We see this when laity and clergy work together to offer our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness. When we pull all of these elements together in ministry, we are an unstoppable force spreading God's goodness throughout our churches, our communities and the world.

This training provides an introduction to the unique and important role the faith community plays in disaster mitigation, preparation and response. Jim Boesch named deployed staff member for men's ministry
Jim Boesch

 

NASHVILLE -- Jim Boesch, one of the first persons to be certified as a men's ministry specialist, has been named one of four deployed staff members of the General Commission on United Methodist Men.

 

After completing training sessions with Orlando-based Man in the Mirror, Boesch engaged in courses in United Methodist polity and history, safe sanctuary training, and hands-on experience in men's ministry in a local church. He was certified as a men's ministry specialist in 2009.

 

Boesch has taught adult-education classes in local churches, and he has equipped church members to lead discipling experiences, Bible studies and Sunday school classes.

 

As a nationally certified trainer and learning facilitator, he helped the commission place courses on United Methodist History and Doctrine on the web so others training to become men's ministry specialists would be able to take the course on line.

 

In recent years, Boesch has also been active in the delivery of the "Understanding Men's Ministry" discipleship training for clergy and lay leaders in the Florida and West Ohio annual conferences.

 

"Jim is an extremely talented and gifted man," said Gil Hanke, top staff executive of the General Commission on United Methodist Men. "He was instrumental in the development of the Understanding Men's Ministry Leadership Training, and an Advanced Lay Speaking course. He also served on the team to refine that course as part of the men's ministry certification process. He has successfully combined his training skills used in his profession with our training needs in men's ministry."

 

"I am very humbled to serve as a member of the deployed staff team," said Boesch. "I fully support the direction the commission is taking in the renewal of our local churches through transformational ministry-with-men discipleship programs."

 

Jim is now living back in Florida and is available to speak with any and all local or district level United Methodist Men's groups in regards to facilitating an "Understanding Men's Ministry" or "Lead Like Jesus" servant leadership training program at their facilities.

Choir Members Needed for General Conference Opening Ceremonies

Greetings,

 

My name is Lee Lallance, and I am the Mass Choir Coordinator for General Conference, which is being held at the Tampa Convention Center from Tuesday, April 24, 2012 through Friday, May 4, 2012. This is the gathering of United Methodist Bishops, delegates, and musicians from all over the world who come together every four years to make global decisions about the United Methodist Church. For many of us this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be involved at a world conference of this magnitude.

 

I am writing to ask if you and your choir would be interested in participating in the opening ceremonies of General Conference. Outstanding composers have been commissioned to write the opening choral and orchestral music, and our hopes are to have a 350 voice choir and orchestra for this world event.

 

The opening of the General Conference will happen at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at the Tampa Convention Center with a rehearsal prior in the late morning and a run through in the afternoon (exact time still to be decided).

 

The music is almost complete and shortly I can send you the anthems which can be reproduced for your singers.

 

Please consider participating in this fabulous event which won't be held close to us again for quite some time. Required Inclusivity Training for all Full Time Clergy 

 

A letter of invitation has been mailed from the Bishop's office with details regarding the mandated inclusivity training that all full-time clergy will need to attend in 2012. Some details related to cost and the exact locations of these training events are still being finalized at the conference office. However, we wanted to let you know the dates and regions that are being targeted for this training so you can get one of the training sessions on your calendar now. You will be able to use CE or RA funds for the cost and it will count for your continuing education requirements for 2012.  Also, Conference CE funds may also be available depending on whether or not you have used those funds recently.

 

Having personally experienced this training already, I (Wayne) can wholeheartedly say it was well worth the investment of time and energy. I learned a great deal about my own experiences and the experiences of others and how those experiences shape our interactions with one another. You will learn and grow in positive ways from this experience.

2012 Property and Casualty, Automobile, Workers Comp Insurance Allocation Costs Available Online
We are pleased to announce that the Florida Annual Conference has again experienced a very successful property and casualty insurance program renewal. After the 2004/2005 hurricanes, an initial sharp increase in premiums was followed by unprecedented premium reductions over the next several years. However, the ultimate goal for any successful insurance program should be cost effective premiums that are stable and consistent from year to year, in return for comprehensive insurance protection.
 

For the third consecutive year, the Florida Annual Conference has succeeded in providing that premium stability in spite of a struggling economy and record number of worldwide disasters, in part due to the faithful stewardship and proactive leadership of local member churches. While your individual church allocation may vary from prior years (due to local factors such as property appraisals, new vehicles, new buildings, etc), the overall cost of the insurance program for 2012 is exactly the same as the two prior years.

2011 Workers Compensation Payroll Survey  

In order to comply with State of Florida requirements related to workers compensation coverage, we ask that you complete the brief online payroll form, [click here] . Please review your payroll records (941's etc.) for the calendar year 2011 and complete the form as accurately as possible. Please note that your responses will not affect your workers compensation insurance costs for 2012 as this updated information is simply required to comply with requirements of the State of Florida.

United Methodist Scholarships for College Students
FL UM Foundation The Florida United Methodist Foundation is now accepting applications for two scholarship programs and we need your help to get the word out. 
 
The attached poster describes The Sinclair Scholarship, available to students who will be incoming freshmen in fall 2012, and the Alice W. Lockmiller Scholarship, open to students already enrolled in a college or university. Deadline for application is March 9, 2012.

 

Applicants must be active church members with a solid academic record and a commitment to church and community service. Application forms may be downloaded from the Foundation web site, www.fumf.org. Please post the attached information so that your church families can see it. These scholarships are available to United Methodist students only.

Caring for Creation

Caring for Creation will be taking a major step to reduce its carbon footprint this March when Dr. Bill McKibben, environmental author and founder of 350.org, will interact with participants via Skype. Mckibben, along with over 30 environmental leaders and activists, will explore ways individuals and churches can become more environmentally conscious and good stewards of God's Earth.

 

Dr. Connie Roser-Renouf of the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University will also be joining Caring for Creation via Skype because of her shared concern for reducing her carbon footprint. Skype will offer participants the opportunity for conversation with McKibben and Roser-Renouf following their individual presentations.

Named for the safe level of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere, 350 parts per million, 350.org is an international grassroots campaign that aims to mobilize a global climate movement. For over 20 years, McKibben has been environmentally active, releasing over a dozen books and various articles examining climate change.

 

Over 20 workshops on topics such as "A Biblical Theological Foundation for Creation Care" to "Faith Principles of Creation Care" are available.  Early registration deadline is February 15, 2012.

RECLAIM 2012: Young Adult Ministry Conference
RECLAIM 2012A gathering to encourage ministry for and with young adults 

and to inspire the next generation to reclaim their place in the church

 

The event will be held at Riverside Park UMC in Jacksonville, Florida. Registration is open now. We have an amazing line-up of faculty and worship leaders, such as Bishop Will WIllimon of the North Alabama Conference, Pastor Candace Lewis, Dr. Sandra Richter and more. These amazing men and women will be coming to share with us for the weekend, and there will also be times to connect with them one-on-one. 

 

We are calling church leaders and young adults from all over Florida to connect at Reclaim 2012. This year's gathering will have special sessions for those interested in reaching out to the next generation.

The Florida Conference will be hosting General Conference 2012 at the Tampa Convention Center, April 24 thru May 4. This conference brings together delegates from around the world who determine current and future policies of the United Methodist Church.


Under the leadership of Rev. Jim Harnish, the Florida Hospitality Team has been working to provide "a warm welcome" for the arrival of up to 5,000 delegates, visitors and guests. "We ask for everyone's support to meet the large need for volunteers to host this event".
