Dear Michelle,
The Balanced Life!
While away on vacation, I tried to read and do things that were not necessarily associated with the church. My older brother Steve, who is ten years my senior but healthier in his eating and exercise, gave me a book to read that he said changed his life and the way he thought about food and eating. The title of the book, In Defense of Food an Eater's Manifesto by Michael Pollan, immediately grabbed my attention. I love good food and I have been struggling to control my calorie intake and eat the "right things" for a healthier life. At age 64, my brother Steve puts me to shame. He is an avid windsurfer, surfer, cyclist, hiker, gourmet "healthy" cook, and an extremely in shape and good looking guy! Although at fifty-four I feel thirty-five, my body tends to revolt against that notion at 6:30 in the morning! Nevertheless, I'm reading about health, good food choices and nutrition vs. "nutritionism." It seems as if our culture is obsessed with low-fat, nonfat foods along with thin and thinner bodies. The author introduced me to a new word that gave me hope for my own outlook on healthy eating. He introduced me to the word Orthorexia Nervosa -- an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating. It's not recognized as yet by the DSM-IV, but some psychologists have recently suggested that it's time it was. They are seeing more and more patients suffering from this obsession in healthy eating. While this is not my problem, it did remind me that anything that pulls us out of balance isn't good for us! I strive for a balance in my spiritual-life, home-life, diet, exercise, work, and play. And I wonder, when it comes to our faith, are we "in balance"? Could you imagine what it might be like if we spent all of our time reading scripture but never applied it to our lives? If we studied scripture, but never shared it, taught it, or preached upon its significance? The Christian life is one that is called to shine in the world... to be salt and LIGHT. Are we balancing our Being and our Doing? When it comes to our bodily health, we have the warning signs in blood pressure readings, cholesterol counts, and a multitude of other test procedures. (I'm due for my annual physical this month and getting a blood test tomorrow!) Too often we fail to examine our spiritual health. I'm wondering if you've taken your personal Spiritual Physical lately. What's out of balance? What might you be doing too much or too little of? Where do you need to focus to be more "in balance" in your spiritual life? I recently signed up to be a volunteer at Destiny Foundation in Orlando. My goal is to give them an hour or two each week in volunteer service to those in need in my neighborhood. That's one place where I was out of balance... how about you?
I Love Being Your District Superintendent, Wayne 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
P.S. We are reinstituting the mystery word contest this month. Be the first to find the words servant evangelism in close proximity and win a $25 gift certificate to Cokesbury. |

Kudos & Congratulations!!
First UMC of Deland published disciple-making material through Xlibris publishers. The Twelve Essentials for Disciple-Making Everyone's Ministry was authored by former Assistant Minister Dr. Joseph Arthur, who also assisted in recent Lay Speaker Training at Deland. The book is designed as a tool for a one-on-one disciple making ministry. This is NOT a "program" where a person feels they have accomplished a goal of reaching the end; rather, it is a lifestyle we wish to instill in our members. The book has been released to Barnes and Nobles, Books a Million, and is available through the Xlibris [website] or by calling 888-795-4274 ext. 7876.
First UMC of Orlando and "IDignity" - a charity that provides identification to the poor in Central Florida. Beginning their second year of monthly events, First UMC of Orlando was one of five founding churches that developed the program and continues to be heavily involved in its operation and leadership. Rev. Britt Gilmore has been very active, particularly with the difficult process of obtaining out-of-state birth certificates. [Read more]
Rev. Dwayne & Mrs. Kimberly Craig were blessed with baby Aaliyah Madison on July 23. Aaliyah joins big sister Naomi at the Craig family. Rev. Craig serves as Senior Pastor at Tuskawilla UMC.
Rev. David & Mrs. Alison Juliano, just returned from a 2 and ½ week trip to China to adopt a beautiful, 19 month old Chinese baby girl. Her name is Lily Grace. Day by day activity of the Juliano family in China can be viewed at www.lilyinchina.shutterfly.com. David is pastor of Grace UMC, Lake Mary. Well wishes may be sent to j.david.juliano@flumc.org.
Kudos to Mrs. Lynn Campbell, Administrative Assistant at Tuskawilla UMC, on her completion of the week-long Certification program -- July 19-24 towards becoming a Certified Professional UMC Secretary. This program is sponsored by the General Council on Finance and Administration of The United Methodist Church in Nashville, Tennessee and the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
Azalea Park UMC prayerfully decided that in order to be a Radically Hospitable church they had to build a handicapped restroom. As a small church this was quite an undertaking. They had a dinner auction and raised about $10,000. A church member drew up the plans and with the incredible help of two teams of Nomads an old office was gutted, reframed out, plumbed, painted, tiled and finally readied for use. What a wonderful experience to see a church take concrete steps in becoming a welcoming community [see pic] |

A Word from Janet
Dear Friends,
Like Wayne, I too spent time relaxing, reading, reflecting, and enjoying life's simple pleasures while on vacation in July. It was pure joy for me to escape the realities of our otherwise hectic lifestyle while we enjoyed the Indiana summer at our cottage on Lake Webster. An inspirational highlight of my first week was reading "same kind of different as me" by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. This amazing book, recommended by two trusted friends in May 2008, had laid beside my bed with my intention to read for over a year. Once I picked it up this summer it only took me 2 days to read as I simply could not put it down. I have no doubt that it was part of a greater plan than just to bless me personally. I encourage you to put it on your "must read" list soon. A true story, inspired by God, it deeply touched my heart, advancing my concern and care for "the least of these..." Gritty with pain, betrayal, and brutality, this true story also shines with an unexpected, life-changing love and hope as it drives home the true mission God has planned for our journey here on Earth. Reading the story of Debbie's persistence has re-energized me to continue to make a difference in the lives of others. Debbie's compassion, vision, and determination inspired me that the time is NOW for me to get involved in rewriting the next chapter of my life story. Most importantly this story helped me realize that although we are each different individuals - we are in so many ways the same. In the words of Denver Moore... "We're all just regular folks walkin' down the road God done set in front of us... just workin' our way toward home." Both inspirational and bittersweet, this book will stay with you for a lifetime... With joy for the journey, Janet Kelley Lay Leader, East Central District jkelley@flumc.org

Don't just "LAY" there . . . Be part of a laity movement in the East Central District making a difference for the future
Do you have a passion for getting your congregation into the surrounding community and transforming your congregation to be more missional? Do you want to be part of a movement of laity who leave a legacy for future generations?
As in the Acts church, Bishop Whitaker has initiated an effort to mobilize the laity to breathe new spiritual life into the churches of the Florida Conference. He has asked Russ Graves to lead this effort across the Conference. To do this, laity who have a passion for and a commitment to extending God's Kingdom here on earth will need to come forward. If you feel God calling you to something greater, plan to attend an orientation meeting for Lay Leadership Training this August. This 1½ hour orientation gathering led by Russ Graves and Kim Shockley will introduce laity to the Lay Leadership training to be launched in the East Central District on Friday and Saturday, October 16th & 17th.
To learn more and to ask questions, laity are invited to attend one of two Lay Leadership orientation sessions.
Sunday, August 23 from 5:00 - 6:30 pm at First UMC, Port Orange Thursday, August 27 from 5:30 - 6:30 pm, First UMC, Winter Park We are excited about this effort, and I pray that you will feel called to attend an orientation session and, hopefully, want to become actively involved in extending God's Kingdom throughout the local churches of the East Central District. Please join me in prayer for this effort and for Russ Graves who has come forward in faith to answer God's call to lead this effort.
With joy for the journey,

Next Conference Table to Focus on Clergy Excellence Thurs., Sept. 3rd from 10am to 3 pm at Community of Faith UMC, Davenport
The next Florida Conference Table will be on the topic of "Clergy Excellence." The event will be held Thursday Sept. 3, from 10 am to 3 pm, at the Community of Faith Church in Davenport. Directions to the church are available [here]. This Conference Table event is open to all people interested in the topic. The Conference Table concept was established by a resolution at the 2002 Florida Annual Conference. The first Conference Table was held in August of that same year.
This session will offer a space for true Christian conferencing around issues of clergy excellence - what it is, why it is important, and what helps or hinders it. The event will differ from previous Conference Tables in that it will utilize an "open space technology" format. This method for discussion is based on the idea that the circle is the fundamental geometry of open human communication and that participants are the best ones to shape the actual agenda and process of a work session. Participants will plan the meeting's program onsite based on the issues of importance to them in that time and space. Voluntary self-selection is central to open space technology in that each individual will be responsible for their own learning and input into the meeting. Those who attend will decide what topics to discuss, how it will be discussed and will design an action plan to help address the issues raised; Two United Methodist laity familiar with the process will serve as facilitators. The session will not be web cast as previous Conference Tables, due to the unique format that will be utilized. To register for the Conference Table, [click here] |

Congregational Transformation in the EC District By Kim Shockley
So let's pick up where I left off on the July article - what steps can you take to begin to move from "me" to "us"? When I mention "us" I'm really not talking about your group of "mes", but rather the collective "us" that includes even the "thems" that we generally don't want to include or make us uncomfortable. Cultivating the soil of our own individual lives is important work for Christian disciples!
To a great extent, this question has to do with what your own issues are, but there are several points and challenges that could be made that may be helpful for everyone. Scripture is the first place where we meet the challenge of moving from meservant to evangelismus. The Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of Matthew is a great place to find direction that moves the focus off of "me". Jesus message, especially in the Beatitudes is very pointed: [Read More] |

Health & Wholeness Ministries Does your congregation emphasize the importance of the whole person and the interdependence of the physical, emotional, and spiritual components of each person? This is the basis for health and wholeness ministries. This may be led by a health and wholeness team, or a parish nurse (community health nurse), or may be fragmented under different areas. We would like to identify a key individual at each congregation that can share information about programs and needs.
Examples of programs and ministries might be physical fitness programs, emergency preparedness, health education, support when in need, referrals etc. Please contact Judy Davis parish nurse at First UMC Apopka judyadavis@embarqmail.com or Betsy McKeeby parish nurse at First UMC Winter Park betsym@fumcwp.org.

Wash Your Hands and Send Germs Down the Drain! by Erica Edgar Hoyt, MSN, RN
Instructor, UCF College of Nursing
Due to the increased awareness of H1N1 Flu Strain, first known as Swine Flu, and with school starting again soon, now would be a good time to review steps to decrease chances of becoming ill. Children will be exposed to unfamiliar germs from new classmates. Now is the best time to remind everyone about the steps to prevent the spread of germs. Frequent hand washing can actually help prevent absences from school and work. The common cold, flu, and many other illnesses are spread from person-to-person by germs in droplets from an infected person's lungs, throat, mouth or nose. You cannot see germs! Since we don't see the germs, it is easy to forget they are present. Without being able to see the germs, children often have a difficult time understanding how to prevent these invisible invaders from hurting them. To make matters worse, a person who is infected but doesn't feel sick yet is capable of spreading these germs. It is possible to catch an illness from someone before the person even had symptoms of feeling poorly. Continue Reading . . . |
