The East Central District Newsletter
|
Dear Michelle,
Part
of my devotional life during Lent has been reading excerpts from the
works of Henri J.M. Nouwen. As one of my favorite theologians, I
believe he captures the emotion of Easter in this prayer. I look forward to our greeting on Easter Morning...
"The Lord is Risen; The Lord is Risen Indeed!" He has been raised; he is not here. --Mark 16:6 An Easter Prayer Dear Jesus,
You
once were condemned; you are still being condemned. You once carried
your cross; you are still carrying your cross. You once died; you are
dying still. You once rose from the dead; you are still rising from the
dead. I look at you, and you open my eyes to the way in
which your passion, death and resurrection are happening among us every
day. But within me there is a deep fear of looking at my own world. You
say to me: "Do not be afraid to look, to touch, to heal, to comfort and
to console." I listen to your voice, and, as I enter more deeply into
the painful, but also hope-filled, lives of my fellow human beings, I
know that I enter more deeply into your heart... As your
passion, death and resurrection continue in history, give me the hope,
the courage and the confidence to let your heart unite my heart with
the hearts of all your suffering people, and so become for us the
divine source of new life. You have conquered death and
give us new life in you, O lord, our God.
Alleluia!
--Henri J. M. Nouwen. I Love Being Your District Superintendent, Wayne 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
P.S. Be the first to find the words "Easter Egg" in this edition of the EC News and e-mail me with your find for an Easter Prize! ds-ec@flumc.org |

| 2009 Apportionments Rolled Back to 2008 Level |
Information
from Mickey Wilson, treasurer of the Florida Conference, and the Office
of Financial Services, about the apportionment rollback
 We
have received several calls asking about the revised 2009
apportionments. It seems there is some confusion as to why the
announced roll back of 8 to 10 percent appears to be only 3 or 4
percent. It is our hope that the clarification below will
provide a better understanding of the connectional giving system.
Apportionments may be broken down into two categories: fixed and
flexible. Fixed apportionments cannot be adjusted by the Conference
Council on Finance and Administration (CFA). These fixed costs include:

| Courage and the Intentional Disciple |
Congregational Transformation in the EC District by Kim Shockley
I
decided to do a courageous thing this past week and took a copy of the
CT Blog's latest entry - "What's a mature disciple?" to my home
group. We've been meeting for quite some time and have used lots
of discussion starters, but we have never quite made it to John
Wesley's question - "How is it with your soul?" I was pleased to
use this document as a discussion opportunity both for feedback
purposes and to lead this group to a deeper level of
conversation. Our evening was fruitful!
Intentional
Discipling, as one of the five practices of the United Methodist Way,
has been for many of us a life-long opportunity. Using the word
"intentional" leads me to a place of accountability, not
assumption. If I am on a journey there are some times when I need
to know that I am still heading to the place I intend - so mile markers
and land marks become very important. So, taking the time to be
intentional about my journey toward being a mature follower of Jesus
means that I must acknowledge growth and fruitfulness as well as
shortcomings. The blog entry is a starting place for discussion
about what some of those mile markers and land marks could be. I
would encourage you to check it out at http://ctblog.flumc.org and provide feedback. Please remember, this document is a starting place - it is not final!
Two
Intentional Discipling events are coming to our Annual
Conference. Of the four events, the two that are closest to us in
the EC District are on May 15th at Grace United Methodist Church in
Fort Clarke, which will look at what it means to be a "simple church,"
strategically focused on making disciples. Eric Greiger, author of
"Simple Church: Returning to God's Process for Making Disciples" will
be the speaker for the day. The second event will be on September
11th at First UMC Port Orange. "Deepening Your Effectiveness:
Restructuring the Local Church for Life Transformation" is the title of
a book written by Dan Glover and Claudia Lavy, who will lead these
workshops in Port Orange.
Blessings on you as you continue your journey!

| Mystery Guests |
DCT Team sends out "mystery guest" to local congregations
The EC District Congregational Transformation Team is taking on
the responsibility of sending out Mystery Guests to all of our East
Central District congregations in 2009. As we move through the
training opportunities for the Five Practices of the United Methodist
Way, it is important that we discover and encourage one another to be
living them. As a response from the Radical Hospitality training
last fall our District Superintendent has encouraged our DCT Team to
develop this work!
After a visit with a specific congregation, the guest will be
in consultation with a Congregational Transformation Team member, and
then the pastor will be contacted so that we can share the experience,
preferably with the church's leadership team at its next scheduled
meeting. Our hope is that a realistic report from a real visitor
will be very helpful for each congregation.
Members of the DCT Team will be available to meet with your
leadership at your convenience after a visit. If you have
questions, or would like to be a Mystery Guest, please contact Kim
Shockley at 407-896-2230 x 101 or kshockley@flumc.org. |

Intentional Discipleship workshops announced |
| Continuing to spotlight disciple-making practices of fruitful congregations
As
part of our continuing spotlight on the five disciple-making practices
of fruitful congregations, the Florida Conference will be focusing on
"Intentional Discipleship" by offering two series of two, one-day
workshops. These workshops will help local church leaders go deeper in
their understanding of fulfilling the Great Commission of Matthew 28:
"Go and make disciples . . . and teach them to obey all that I have
commanded you."
The first series "The Simple Church Workshop" will be held: May 15 at Grace United Methodist Church, Gainesville May 16 at First Boca Raton (East Campus)
The
Simple Church will look at what it means to be a "simple church,"
strategically focused on making disciples. "Simple Church: Returning to
God's Process for Making Disciples" is the name of book written by Thom
Rainer and Eric Geiger that calls for congregational leaders to return
to the simple Gospel-sharing methods of Jesus. In our frantic and
complex culture where congregations are no longer the center of
community life, no bells or whistles are required, so to speak. Based
on case studies of 400 American churches, Rainer and Geiger show that
the process for making disciples has often become too complex or even
lost among all the religious activities that pack many congregations'
busy calendars. During the workshop, led by Geiger, participants
will hear how "simple churches" who focus on their intentional
discipling process are thriving, while many congregations with hectic
calendars are not. Geiger will help congregational leaders begin to
look at their own church calendars in light of Christ' s call for us to
"make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world."
The second series, "Deepening Your Effectiveness," will be held: Sept. 11, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm @ First United Methodist Church in Port Orange Sept. 12, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm @ First United Methodist Church in Punta Gorda
"Deepening
Your Effectiveness: Restructuring the Local Church for Life
Transformation" is the title of a book written by Dan Glover and
Claudia Lavy, who will lead these workshops. Their premise is that
becoming a Christian disciple is supposed to be life-altering; a
process of maturation and transformation. The church, they say, is to
intentionally support that development - both individually and
corporately. Sometimes, though, pitfalls and barriers in life and even
within the church itself can damage committed but unequipped followers.
Proposing a "deep-sea change" from the typical church plan, Glover and
Lavy offer experienced coaching in how to systematize disciple-making
in a congregation. (Visit their Web site at (www.deepeningyoureffectiveness.com)

Summer youth camping opportunities at Riverside Retreat Riverside Retreat will be hosting two summer camping opportunities for youth in 2009. The first, "Pray!!"
will explore the many facets of prayer. This summer, participants will
learn about prayer through reflection on five biblical texts that show
God's people at prayer. Children's camp will be July 5 to 10;
youth camp will be July 12 - 18. Cost for either camp will be
$340.
The second summer camp is titled, "How'd That Get on my Plate?"
This camp will explore what we eat from beginning to end. May 29 to 31,
participants will get acquainted with one another, begin studies and
plant a container garden. They will prepare their own meals, learning
the many skills involved in cooking. August 1 to 6, they will return
for a week of harvest, preparation and exploration. Daily tours will
take them to explore an egg farm, dairy, ECHO and more. Morning
devotions and evening worship will focus on the biblical mandates to
care for all of creation. Trained staff will share their
skills in food preparation, container gardening, biblical information
about various herbs and vegetables, the social effects of our choices
in food purchasing and more. This exciting experience is for youth
who have completed grades 5 through 11. It involves one weekend
in May and a full week in August. Participants must be able to attend
both events. Cost will be $390 which includes all meals, field trips,
camp photo and T-shirt.

| Lutheran Counseling Center promotes Afghanistan Mission Project |
| A Coffee House Ministry: Cups of Kindness! A Taste of Thanks!
It's
for a Central Florida Army Reserve unit now at an Afghanistan site in
our nation's war on terror! Your simple gift not only benefits Central
Floridians, but potentially helps all communities who send sons and
daughters to Afghanistan to wear our nation's defense uniforms. The
Unit Ministry Team (UMT) of Orlando's 143D Expeditionary Sustainment
Command (Army Reservists) wants to set up a Coffee House Ministry at
Kandahar, Afghanistan. Approximately 150 reservists from the 143D
were scheduled for deployment to Kuwait, but their orders were changed
in December to report to Afghanistan.
Kandahar
is a central location for the growing mission in Afghanistan.
Tens of thousands of soldiers, airmen/women, naval personnel, and
marines, as well as international allies and civilian contractors, are
expected to work at or travel through Kandahar. The 143D UMT is
setting up a Coffee House Ministry at The Chapel Ministry
Center. Not only is the Chapel Ministry Center the place of
worship, Bible study, counseling, etc., it can be a tremendous central
gathering place, "a home away from home," for those who wear our
nation's uniforms. The Coffee House Ministry is based on the concept.... [Read More] |
