Dear Michelle,
Rev. Marilyn Beecher

As a Youth Director years ago, I remember leading a Bible study about Peter and John entering the temple (Acts 3). The lame man was begging. Peter said, "I don't have any silver or gold, but what I have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ, get up and start walking." Peter then took him by the hand and helped him stand up.

When I asked the youth what impressed them most about this story, they immediately responded that it was the authority with which Peter spoke, the confidence he had and the power of the Spirit working through him. "Why don't we have that kind of power today", they asked.

CCC LogoWhat do you have that you can give? Some of us may have silver and gold to give to serve others in ministries of compassion and justice. Others may have time or talent. All of us have the powerful name of Jesus of Nazareth to share. If we are truly rooted in his Spirit, we will always have ways to understand the true needs of people and care for them with His love.

Grace and peace,

Marilyn

Is God Calling You to a Ministry of Foster Care?
Consider Open Hearts Family Services
Throughout scripture, we hear God's call over and over to care for the "least of these" among us. Among the "least" in our society today are children who must enter foster care through no fault of their own. It is God's intention that his people take the lead in ministering to these children in crisis. That's why we Florida United Methodists have supported the work of the Florida United Methodist Children's Home for over 100 years. Now our Children's Home has expanded it's ministry into the area of foster care. Called "Open Hearts Family Services," this ministry of our Home serves children and families throughout five counties in the East Central District, plus Hillsborough County. Open Hearts is urging United Methodists in our congregations to step forward and become foster parents, offering the love of God to children who are in such great need of love.

To help you determine if God is calling you to this life-transforming ministry, about every two months Open Hearts is holding informational sessions, called "Q and A: Pondering Foster Care." The next one will be Saturday, July 16 at 3:00 p.m. at the First UMC in Kissimmee (101 W. Dakin Ave.). We also have tentatively scheduled one on Sunday, September 18 at 3:00 p.m. (probably in Seminole County). Come with all your questions.

You are also invited to Volunteer with Open Hearts and/or the Children's Home. A training for volunteers will be held Monday, September 26 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at our Orlando Open Hearts office located at Reeves UMC (1100 N. Ferncreek Ave.).

For more information, or to request a speaker or preacher from Open Hearts, contact Rev. John Gill, Community Development Coordinator  at 386-299-8142 or john.gill@fumch.org.
