Dear Michelle,
Marilyn Beecher
The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) allocates major federal funding to area agencies that provide emergency assistance to those who cannot pay their rent, mortgage or utilities or have no resource to provide food for their families.  I serve as Chairperson of the Seminole County EFSP Board.  Each meeting in the past year has seen demand on agencies like Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and Christian Service Center grow beyond belief.  Requests for assistance are triple and quadruple the numbers of two years ago.  At our meeting on October 6, two of the largest agencies in Central Florida said, "We are at capacity.  We cannot do any more than we are already doing."

There is a double whammy - just as the needs are increasing, contributions are falling off.   This economic crisis is hitting many people who have never needed assistance before and is devastating for those who were already struggling.

What can your church do?  Look below to find several ministries that are providing services and need your help to do more.  All of these groups need volunteers as well as donations.

Grace and peace,
Marilyn

DISASTER UPDATES - FAY
TS WarningTropical Storm Fay has been called the "silent disaster"
While the damage was extensive throughout the state, TS Fay disappeared from the news quickly.  Financial donations have gone to disaster response work in Texas and the Gulf Coast where larger storms hit.  This leaves a major need for volunteers in the East Central District especially DeBary and throughout Florida.

To volunteer call the Disaster Recovery Ministry 800-282-8011.  Volunteers have already served almost 2,600 hours in tarping roofs, mucking out homes and cleaning up yards.  Rebuilding work is still underway from storms of previous years and will begin shortly for homes damaged in Fay.
EAST CENTRAL DISTRICT DAY CAMPS
Children's Ministry Outreach

A new Children's Ministry Outreach Team has begun meeting in the District to help local churches develop summer day camp programs.  The focus for this past summer and summer '09 will be in the Greater Orlando area as we develop the model, but it is hoped we can expand throughout the District in years to come.  Partner churches and volunteers will be needed.  If you have interest or skills in recreation, sports, music, drama, art, dance or other enrichment areas, please let us know.  Volunteers could plug in for one event or a couple hours each week, depending on your availability.  Youth groups that would like to help lead Vacation Bible School type programs would be most welcome! DAY CAMP LEADER TRAINING
November 21-22 at LEC in Fruitland Park

All day camp ministry leaders in the Florida Conference are invited to the Life Enrichment Center in Fruitland Park Nov. 21-22 to worship, celebrate, network and plan for the future of day camping in the Florida Conference.

The weekend will be led and sponsored by the conference Justice and Spiritual Formation Ministries and Camps and Retreat Ministries. As a result of a similar gathering held last year, the conference launched this summer's mission intern program [read article], offered a spring day camp leaders' training day, offered a full summer day camping curriculum to all who requested it, increased connection among day camping leaders and between day camping leaders and United Methodist volunteer groups, and offered day camp staff training. Mark Thomas, director of the Florida Conference Ministry Protection Department, also provided via conference call, information on liability and insurance issues related to day camping. Another conference call offered information on building ecumenical partnerships.

The cost of the event is covered through grant money given by the Florida Conference Leadership Connection to support the development of day camp and summer feeding programs throughout the conference.

If you are able to attend, please contact Jeannie Jacques at jjacques@flumc.org. You will be booked in a room with another person of the same gender unless you ask to stay with someone who is coming to the event with you. The Life Enrichment Center is located at 4991 Picciola Road, Fruitland Park, FL 34731.
FAIR TRADE
Fair Trade LogoNew Coalition meeting in Orlando

Coffee and handcrafted works of art are increasingly available through Fair Trade programs.  Fair Trade means more of the money you pay for the goods goes directly to the farmer or artisan, giving them a better wage for their work.

A new Fair Trade Coalition is meeting monthly in Orlando and they have people available to speak to youth groups, Sunday School classes and other groups.  They also have a short documentary film available to present.  To learn more, contact Amanda at 321-274-6412
