East Central District Newsletter
February 2008
Dear Michelle,

This past Saturday in Madison, Florida, I attended the first of four events this year scheduled to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the founding of our Florida United Methodist Children's Home.  In 1908, the Florida Annual Conference adopted a resolution to establish a Methodist Home for Orphans. A vision that began a hundred years ago gave birth to what is now our United Methodist Children's Home in Enterprise--one of the finest UM Children's Homes in the Nation.

My journey back to Madison County was more than fulfilling my responsibilities as a District Superintendent and Trustee of the Children's Home. My Journey was a journey back "Home" to the place of my birth, and a powerful reminder of my spiritual roots.

Scores of people came up to "re-introduce" themselves: Glenn Smith, the grown son of my old School Bus Driver by the same name. (We reminisced about his Dad's paddle that was always stored over the rear-view mirror and occasionally put to use!); Mrs. Mercer, my third grade teacher; countless students from my Mother's Senior English Class; the Mayor, Jim Catron, who knew my Dad; and, numerous friends and acquaintances.

Journeys, both spiritual and physical, help define who and whose we are. From my Baptism to my Confirmation; singing my first solo in Church; assuming a leadership role in Youth Group; answering my call to ministry. Each step along the journey helped shape and mold me into the man I am today.

The Lenten Season calls us to examine our lives as we journey together with Christ.  Wesley's Three Simple Rules remind us how we are to live along the way:

(1) Do No Harm
(2) Do Good
(3) Stay in Love with God

I found myself this weekend remembering all those persons who have lived their lives by these precepts. Those who have loved me, taught me, corrected me, and challenged me! I pictured the faces of all the Saints who lived their lives before me by following Wesley's Simple Rules. I gave thanks for the many times they helped guide me along the Journey. During this Lenten Season, I invite you to remember, reflect, and renew as you find Joy on the Journey!

I Love Being Your District Superintendent,
Wayne

P.S. Read down this letter to find a prize, last month it might have escaped your eyes. Dinner for Two could be at your table, with the right kind of recipe, if you are able . . . (Entries extended one more month!)

2 Timothy 1:7 "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
