Dear Michelle ,
By
the time you receive this EC Newsletter, I will be on
vacation. I don't know about you, but getting out of the town
is probably the hardest part! I had a "to do" list about a
mile long and finishing up the July newsletter is about the
last thing on my list!
My destination is Lake Talquin, just
outside of Tallahassee. This small two bedroom Lake Cottage on
a quiet finger of Blount Creek is what I like to call my
personal "Brer Rabbit Briar Patch." While I pretend that
here's much to be done: painting the porch, repairing the
swing, endless yard work; the truth is . . . none of it is
urgent. It's a list that enables me to "piddle," an activity I
think I inherited from my father.
My
three weeks will consist of numerous trips to the dump,
straightening out my tool shed, lying in the hammock,
practicing on my new fly rod, sailing my sunfish, and taking
out the boat for a moonlight cruise or enjoying the laughter
of friends and family enjoying a tube ride or learning how to
water-ski.
The other thing I will surely do is
paddle my canoe to the other side of the lake. It's quiet over
there . . . undeveloped wetlands. And there, among the cypress
stumps and cranes, I will rest my mind. I will remember the
activity of Jesus who got in his boat and went over to the
other side of the lake to escape the crowds. (Matthew
8:18)
It is
my hope and prayer that you are taking some time to find the
still waters this summer. It is vitally important for your
mental and physical health to simply rest.
While I'm piddling this month,
inadvertently, I will complete one of my many ongoing
projects. When it's done, I will sit back and admire the fact
that I have actually finished a task! Something, by the way,
in ministry, we never seem to have the opportunity to do!
I
Love Being Your District Superintendent,
Wayne
2 Timothy 1:7 "For God did not give us a spirit of
timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of
self-discipline.
P.S. I will return to the office on July 24.
There are several retired District Superintendents on call
should you need some help while I'm away. Contact Donna
Kaschalk in the District office at flumc-ec@flumc.org or by calling the East Central District

DARFUR FILM IN ORLANDO - THE DEVIL CAME
ON HORSEBACK The Interfaith Council of Central Florida is going
to collaborate with the Global Peace Film Festival (that is hosted
in Orlando) on Sunday, September 30. The film The Devil Came on
Horseback, a film about Darfur, will be screened followed by an
interfaith dialogue. There will be opportunities for each faith
group to have a table sharing how their particular group is
responding to the genocide and a call to action. The call to action
will involve an advocacy piece (writing letters to officials) and
hopefully a follow-up interfaith service opportunity. For additional
information, Contact Lynette Fields at St. Luke's UMC,
407-876-4991.
