Dear Michelle,
Several weeks ago, I took a couple of
days off and went to our family lake cottage in
north Florida. I scrubbed down my old
sunfish sailboat and launched it for the first
time this year. A light breeze was blowing in
Blount Creek and off I went tacking down the
channel, headed for the big lake. As soon as I
rounded the bend of the creek, I could tell the
breeze would be brisk. I just didn't realize how
strong the wind would be blowing! Suddenly, my
sail filled, the boat arched, and I was flying
across the end of the creek. I tried to come about
quickly, but didn't have enough room to maneuver
against the docks. Before I realized what had
happened, the wind had pushed me into the corner
of a boathouse and I was pinned against a wall.
Some days, ministry can be like that.
Everything is smooth sailing on calm waters and
suddenly, out of nowhere, a wind of confusion or a
wave of chaos hits you and suddenly you feel
helpless and stuck. There is often no way to
navigate these waters easily.
When I got "stuck" several weeks ago,
I had to lower my sail, get out of the boat, and
carefully point myself in the right direction.
Even then, I ran into some submerged stumps and
had to start again several times. Fortunately, I
had my life preserver with me, the memory of a
safe boating course, as well as all the previous
experiences that have informed my boating skills
over the years, or lack thereof . . . I've
sunk one sailboat and a ski-boat in my
lifetime!
When the waters of ministry get
rough, I am reminded of Psalm 107, verse
29: "He stilled the storm to a
whisper; the waves of the sea were
hushed." While some of the 'ministry
storms' we face aren't easy to recover from, we
have the hope and promise that the power of God's
grace and love will see us through to calm the
storm and hush the waves. I love the old Cokesbury
Hymn that states . . . The Winds and the
Waves obey his will, Peace be Still, Peace be
Still . . .
This summer, I hope you will take
the time to renew and re-fuel so that when the
storms do come -- and they will -- you
will be rested and prepared for the inevitable
"winds and waves" of ministry, and be able
to find your way to the calm waters.
Epilogue: In spite of the
winds and the waves, I made it back home that day.
A little shaken, but in one piece!
I Love Being Your District
Superintendent,
Wayne
P.S. The Winner of the "Find
Marley" contest is Carolyn Smith from University
Carillon. She will receive a basket of "Human
Treats" for her "great eye" in reading the EC
News! BTW, Marley was hiding on the healthy foods
link next to the lemon yogurt (his favorite)! This
month Marley is taking a vacation from his
Assistant Editor position in the EC News and will
return again in August with a new contest
idea!

| A Message from Pastor Linda
Mobley
June 2008 |
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
I would love to write to each of
you individually and thank you for all you
have meant to me over the last 10 1/2 years as I
have served on the District Staff doing
Congregational Transformation. I am leaving
the district to take a two-year Intentional
Interim position at Cason United Methodist Church
in Delray Beach and, although I am looking forward
to being in ministry with that church in its
efforts to turn around, there is a sadness that I
will no longer be working with you. Ten
and a half years is a long time to make some very
dear friends among the clergy and
laity. I started January
1, 1998 working with 13 struggling churches in
areas of Orlando that were economically
depressed. It was an
experimental ministry underwritten by what
was then the Board of Missions and Church
Extension and by many of your churches. Since then
I have worked directly with six District
Superintendents (one of them twice), with 52
churches either as a coach, consultant, or
teacher. I have substituted for several
pastors as they vacationed, and taught a whole
range of Sunday school classes and Small
Groups as a guest teacher. I have
facilitated district-wide training events and
worked along side some amazingly gifted people as
Orlando and then the EC District took the
lead as the Annual Conference developed the
ministry of Congregational Transformation. I
have been so blessed to work with pastors who
allowed me "in" to work along-side them and who
have taught me by example the incredible value of
humility, faith in the midst of adversity,
and trust in a God whose grace is sufficient
for all of our needs.
Many of our churches feel like my
children and every one of them is very important
to me. Kim Shockley will
assume staff leadership for our District
Congregational Transformation Team. Her gifts in
Refocus, Coaching, Consulting and Teaching have
been a tremendous asset to our work with
Congregational Transformation and she will
continue living out her passion in this important
ministry in our District. As one person put it,
"That Kim is very, very sharp." And she
is! Blessings to you all and I
will see you
around. Linda

Cleaning Up Bad Communication Habits
by Kibbie Simmons Ruth and Karen A.
McClintock |
| Of the several negative communication
patterns congregations practice, three habits are
particularly problematic: triangulation,
pass-through communication, and anonymous
feedback. While these three may be strategies for
getting needs met, they all block rather than help
healthy communication. Even if well intentioned,
they are deadly habits that in the long run allow
people to dodge accountability, gain power, and
alienate others. Once everyone understands how to
break these habits, those who persist will
eventually have to stop or they will become so
uncomfortable and isolated that they will leave
the congregation. To clean up bad communication
habits, congregations can do three things: reduce
the triangulation, eliminate pass-through
communication, and reject anonymous feedback.

| Tomoka UMC's
"Big Give"
Challenge |
|
On April
27, Pastor John Gill of Tomoka UMC in Ormond
Beach, issued a "Big Give" challenge to his
congregation to raise a significant amount for the
annual conference offering promoted by Bishop
Whitaker. Gaining his inspiration from the Parable
of the Talents and the just completed TV reality
series, "Oprah's Big Give," Rev. Gill distributed
200 one dollar bills to those in worship, money
that was designated from the mission budget of the
church for the Bishop's Offering, and challenged
each person to take their share of the offering
and do something creative with it to multiply its
value, and donating the results. It was expected
that the $200 would at least be doubled (as in the
parable), but the members were amazed when it was
reported that after only two weeks [MORE] |
