Wholeness for our Clergy, Congregations, and Communities
East Central District NewsletterJuly 2010

Dear Michelle,

In a couple of days I begin my Renewal Leave that will take place during July and August. I leave for Rwanda with Zoe Ministries on July 7-19 to participate in the Giving Hope Empowerment Project. www.zoeministry.org

For the remainder of my leave through Labor Day, I will be at our cottage in North Florida on the shores of Lake Talquin where I hope to do some writing and resting!

Donald Hall's book, "Life Work", has shaped some of my thinking on how we deal with the passion for our work and the necessity to spend some time away.  He speaks of "Absorption" as being a reality both in the good work that we do as well as the work that is tiresome and taxing. The truth is that from time to time, we have to get away from our work.

In all four Gospels, Jesus experiences the pressures of ministry and the crowds that continue to "press in" to hear his teaching and receive a healing touch.  On occasion, Jesus escapes the crowds by getting in a boat and going to the "Other Side" of the lake.

The Other Side of the Lake for me (Lake Talquin) is a calming and peaceful place. It is my healing place. It is for me, as the Mystics write, my "Thin Place"... where I feel close to God.

On the Other Side of the Lake, there's a place called the Shallows... where the Cypress Stumps breathe with grace, and the Wood Storks and Osprey nests seem close enough to touch.
On the Other Side of the Lake, Goat Island can be explored. The Goats are long gone, but their winding pathways are exciting adventures with surprises around each bend.

On the Other Side of the Lake, countless lily-pad lined streams beckon you into overgrown canopies that create their own stillness and beauty, daily reminders of the intricacies of God's creation.
On the Other Side of the Lake, there are places where only deer and otter, gators and turtles live in quiet and peaceful coexistence.
On the Other side of the Lake, the Cicadas can sing you to sleep with their symphony of song.
On the Other side of the Lake, the Whippoorwills whip and Mockingbirds mock.
On the Other side of the Lake, Ingrahms Marina is the mid-afternoon "must" stop of the day for ice cream sandwiches and orange sherbet popsicles.
On the Other side of the lake, the "Last Cast" Restaurant hosts amazing friendships, family memories, Low-Country Boils, and stories of the fish that got away!
I think I know why Jesus liked the Other Side of the Lake... he realized the need for an extended Sabbath, a break from the crowds, a time to be alone, a time to share with those he called family and friends...on the Other side of the Lake!

See you in September... I Love Being Your District Superintendent!

Two important items of information from the Department for Ministry Protection!

New Insurance Database:
Please note that effective 7/1/10 the Florida Conference will be replacing the existing CONNECT property and casualty database with a new insurance database, RISK CONSOLE.  This new data platform will contain similar church related information as CONNECT but will eventually allow for increased functionality and capabilities for local churches.  Please note that we anticipate that the database may experience some downtime in early July as RISK CONSOLE becomes fully operational. We appreciate your assistance and patience during the transition period. Further information will be distributed and instructional webinars will be scheduled shortly.

2010 Hurricane Season:
As we all know, we are well into hurricane season.  While we pray that Florida will again be spared of any significant storms, we should all continue to prepare for the worst.  Ministry Protection has been taking ongoing steps to help ensure that hurricane damage sustained by Conference churches will be addressed promptly. Among those steps taken include retaining the services of an insurance adjusting company that specializes in large loss, catastrophic claims to assist Conference churches in the claims process. While the Conference has been making preparations for the storm season, we encourage local churches to do the same. A variety of important information can be found on the Ministry Protection website related to pre-storm preparation, deductible information, insurance summaries and other valuable resources. We encourage local church leaders, including trustees, to review this information.

Please do not hesitate to contact the office or visit the Ministry Protection website [Click Here] for more information and resources.

Congregational Excellence in the District
Kim ShockleyHospitality to Children and Youth by Kim Shockley

In my thirty years as a pastor's wife I guess I have heard it all!  My chosen career began as a Christian Educator, although I never served a congregation as a paid staff member.  The best answer for me was consulting within a district or conference, which compounded how much I have really heard!  When lay people are asked about the growth of their congregation, most of them are going to say that they need to reach younger families because "we don't have many children or youth".  I've heard this from many congregations right here in Central Florida!  I've also heard the same folks get grumpy when a family does come to worship, especially if the children are a little noisy or fidgety!  Unfortunately we can't have it both ways!  If we really want children and youth in our churches then we have to make them and their families feel welcomed!

I've been privileged to be part of two new churches that instinctively knew how to welcome children and youth.  Both of these congregations knew that what children really want is to belong.  One of these congregations did this by providing snacks that were appropriate and healthy - cut-up fruit and cheese and wrapped granola bars were great for children.  I overheard one youngster say to his mom, "Let's come back to this church, their buffet is great!"  They did come back!

Another congregation was able to provide this kind of welcoming and belonging by making "Activity Bags" available in the sanctuary so that kids could quietly entertain themselves during the worship time.  Other churches make relationships important by making sure that the adults that are working with children and youth are trained, cleared according to their policy, and willing to go the extra mile to get to know their students.  When I train Sunday School teachers I encourage them to acknowledge and greet their students when they see them outside of the church.  Kids need to know that they are valued by adults other than their parents!  When you recognize a student and take a minute to talk with them, you are extending God's love to them in such a powerful way!

A testimony gleaned from an older woman at a church (not UM) in the Orlando area really hit home for me.  Their dying small church decided that they needed to change their ministry to attract and engage younger families.  In doing so they completely changed their worship style to be more contemporary and the church started to grow.  When my husband asked her if she liked their new style she replied "No!  But it really wasn't about me, so I love the church we have become!"

Let's face it - we have attracted all the folks we are going to attract by doing things the way we are doing them now!  We have to open up, extend our reach, and put the needs of other people who don't yet know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior ahead of our own!  If you want to get some ideas about how to do this in your community, give me a call or email!  407-896-2230 x 101 or kshockley@flumc.org.  I would love to hear from you!

A brand new Bible study series
by Rev. Dr. Harold Lewis, director of the Florida Conference's Black Congregational Excellence ministry

A brand new Bible study series from the Rev. Dr. Harold Lewis, director of the Florida Conference's Black Congregational Excellence ministry, is now available through the Florida Conference online store at http://www.flumc2.org/product_find.asp.

The eight-week study, titled "8 Essential Lessons for Living a Fruitful Life," includes video segments featuring a brief message from Lewis and written curriculum designed to appeal to a broad audience, including church leaders, small groups and Sunday school classes.

The study's theme is everyday essentials for living a fruitful life in the 21st century. Topics include living by grace, getting connected with others, building on a solid foundation, decision-making, investing in life and worship.

More information about the study and a second series in production is available in the e-Review article "Lewis develops Bible studies, builds relationships in first year" [Click Here to read article].
New Church Development
by David Elyea

Last month's District Superintendent report from Dr. Wiatt included the fact that twelve new churches have been started in the East Central District since 2006. This number is the largest number of new churches started in any District in the Florida Conference in this time period and the Florida Conference leads all other Conferences in the United States in planting new churches!

Our new churches are located from Palm Coast in the North to St. Cloud in the South and from Avalon Park in the East to Clermont in the West. Four of the new churches are Hispanic, one multi-cultural, two Caucasian, one Haitian, and one church is focused on college age young adults.

More of the story is reflected in the statistics reported monthly by these new churches. Two of the churches started since 2006 are just beginning and one has closed, so the following statistics are from nine new congregations. The average number of people in weekly worship for these nine congregations was 847, the average number of people involved in small groups each week was 249, and the total number of first time visitors last month was 149!

Clearly, numbers alone cannot properly convey the impact that these new congregations are having on lives and the communities where they are located. In coming months we will tell the story of some of these churches and of the individuals whose lives have been positively impacted through them.

Disaster Preparedness from DRC: Jeff Campbell
Disaster Recovery
We are well into the 2010 storm season -- Do you have your personal disaster plan prepared? Have you scanned all of your important documents and placed them on a flash drive, or made hard copies of all your papers and have them in a central location? Good. You have made it a lot easier to recover in the event that you will be personally affected by the next major event to hit your life.

Now have you thought about how you will make these as disaster-proof as you can? It's great that you actually have plans to recover from a disaster, but what happens if those plans are lost in the event of a disaster simply because you only made one copy? So, are you traveling to visit family this summer? Is family coming to the land of Disney and Shamu and staying with you? Consider making duplicate copies of your plans and give them to family members in other parts of the country. If you or they are not visiting each other, how about preparing a package and mailing it to them? A flash drive only takes a padded envelope and less than a dollar to mail and paper documents cost a little more because of their weight, but you've gone to this effort to cover yourself if needed. Go ahead and guarantee that all of your legal information survives the next big storm.

So, those of you who don't have a personal disaster recovery plan, why are you waiting?
To Pray at the Races - Civil Religion or
Sacred Moment?

By Timothy McNeil, Community Voices

NASCAR is the only major provider of sports entertainment that includes a prayer in the pre-race ceremony. In my lifetime, I have witnessed the Supreme Court eliminate prayer in public schools, county courthouses banned from displaying manger scenes and the Ten Commandments removed from state houses of government. This privilege granted by NASCAR, and the networks, provides a generous concession to persons of faith who increasingly feel marginalized and their faith minimized in our present culture.

Although NASCAR has intentionally outgrown its Southern roots and developed a nationwide network of tracks and fans, it remains committed to preserving this tradition grounded in the cultural South and evangelical Christianity. Who could have predicted the marriage of Bible-thumping preachers and moonshine runners would ever work?
