East Central District Newsletter April 2010

Dear Michelle,

I have always loved Holy Week. The pageantry of Palm Sunday and the re-enactment of Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem begin a week of remembering the journey to the Cross. While worship is usually packed on both Palm Sunday and Easter, with children waving palm branches and Choirs amplified with Timpani and Trumpets,  it has always been puzzling to me how the majority of worshipers choose to "stay away" during the more somber and reflective services of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. For the most part, it seems we want to be part of the celebration but not the sacrifice.

While it's true that Maundy Thursday comes from the Latin, meaning a "mandate," I haven't heard of any pastors "mandating" attendance on Holy Thursday!  Parishioners have told me in the past, "It's too sad, I don't like the somber nature of the communion service or the darkness of the Tenebrae worship." While I can understand a reticence to deal with such raw emotion, I am also mindful of Christ's obedience to follow the "Way of the Cross."

In past worship experiences during Holy Week, it was the journey that captivated my spirit. The journey from celebration to contemplation, the journey from shouts of "Hosanna" to cries of "Crucify Him," the journey from fellowship around the table to an act of betrayal by a friend, the journey from the cross on Calvary to the darkness of the Garden Tomb, the journey from the sting of death to the exclamation "He is Risen!"

One of my pastors always signs his correspondence, "Joy on the Journey!"  The old revival preacher in his resounding refrain says it best, "Friday's Here...but Sunday's A-Comin". We tend to move quickly through the "Friday Experiences" to rush toward Sunday. As always, Holy Week calls me to reflect, rethink, react, receive, renew, and finally to REJOICE!

Don't rush through the journey too quickly...take some time to linger at the foot of the Cross.

O Sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down,
Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, thine only crown:
How pale thou art with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn!
How does this visage languish which once was bright as morn!
What thou, my Lord, has suffered was all for sinners' gain;
Mine, mine was the transgression, but thine the deadly pain.
Lo, here I fall, my Savior! 'Tis I deserve thy place;
Look on me with thy favor, Vouchsafe to me thy grace.
What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest friend,
For this thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end?
O make me thine forever; and should I fainting be,
Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee. Amen

Bishop Whitaker

On Sunday night, March 21, 2010, Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a speech prior to the vote of the House of Representatives on the bill about insurance reform and health care.  In her speech, the Speaker praised a few organizations for their advocacy, including "The United Methodist Church."

The staff of the General Board of Church and Society has been active for a long time advocating for universal health care as a moral priority for the United States.  The board advocates on behalf of The United Methodist Church according to the statements in the Social Principles and the Book of Resolutions which are adopted by the General Conference.  Paragraph 162.V of the Social Principles in Book of Discipline is titled "Right to Health Care," and it states, "We believe that it is a governmental responsibility to provide all citizens with health care."  Moreover, in the Book of Resolutions 2008, Resolution No. 3201 on page 346 is titled "Health Care for All in the United States," and it contains a long discussion of the issues and "advocacy steps" which the staff of the General Board of Church and Society is obligated to follow.  This resolution was first adopted by the General Conference in 2000.

The staff of the General Board of Church and Society works with members of both major political parties and other religious organizations to advocate for the principles expressed in the Social Principles and the Book of Resolutions.  The board has long advocated for the principle of universal health care, and, because of its work, The United Methodist Church has been recognized by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States for its vision of a country in which there is health care for all.

Community Building Event: reBUILD HAITI
Response to Haiti Earthquake: June 13th from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Haitian Mission

reBUILD HAITIOver the past month we have been moved and troubled deeply by the difficulties faced by folks living in the poorest nation in our hemisphere struggling with such unspeakable devastation.  So far the best way to help has been to donate funds.  Church members have responded generously throughout our district, raising thousands of dollars for those in Haiti and creating awareness of the need.

Efforts at First UMC of Winter Park to raise funds and awareness led to meeting with International Child Care (ICC) Board Member Rev. Lynne Austin and Rev. Eliantus Valmyr of Emmanuel Haitian Mission about ways to build community among our churches here in the East Central District in order to help rebuild communities in Haiti.

We are planning a very special event to which Rev. Eliantus Valmyr and Rev. Bob Bushong invite you and your congregations.  We hope you will join us in this effort on June 13, 2010. [Click Here] to register your attendance.
Preparing Volunteer Teams For Haiti
Leaders from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) have been in Haiti to meet with Methodist Church leaders, to plan for sending teams and to look at priority projects.  The infrastructure in Haiti is still very fragile. Working through UMVIM is the best way to optimize the assistance your team will be able to give, to ensure you do not tax an already severely overtaxed system (considerations such as food, supplies, transportation, trash disposal, etc.) and to ensure the safety of your team. This is a very unique and challenging setting even for experienced mission teams.

Criteria for UMVIM teams are as follows:
1. Teams should be no more that 8-12 members.
2. The team leader should have previous experience working in Haiti.
3. Team leader must have UMVIM Team leader training.  (Next training May 14-15, LaBelle, FL)
4. All team members must have the necessary immunizations recommended by the CDC.
5. Early Response Training (ERT) is not necessary but is helpful for team members.

UMCOR has three staff people who will be coordinating the work including a Volunteer Team Coordinator.  They will be in place starting April 1.  Workteams are expected to begin work Easter week 2010.  Work teams can register at www.umvim.org. Going through UMVIM will mean meals and housing through the Methodist guest house in Port Au Prince; work projects, building supplies and logistics being prepared for your team; UMVIM insurance to cover your team; translators provided to work with your team.  All teams will be asked to hire at least two Haitians to help with the work.

If you are planning a team and need to find someone with the team leader qualifications of having been on a mission trip to Haiti and having been through the VIM team leader training, please contact Marilyn Beecher or Florida Conference VIM. We may be able to match you up with someone who could co-lead a team - your local church team leader can still provide the coordination of your group and with on site supervision of the work while the "experienced" co-leader could assist with logistics.
UM Volunteers in Mission Team Leader Training
May 14 - 15, 2010 at Riverside Retreat in LaBelle, Florida

UMVIM Leader training prepares volunteers to lead Volunteer in Mission teams to projects in the United States and around the world. You will learn the "ins and outs" of organizing a mission trip from recruiting the team, to picking the location, getting support, staying safe, planning the work and much, much more.  You'll also enjoy a wonderful time of fellowship with other mission-minded folks in a beautiful camp setting.

Participants stay in dorm-style lodges with bunk beds.  Cost is $55 per person and includes lodging, three meals (dinner, breakfast and lunch) and all training materials.  Trainers include Sue Macchiarella, Florida Conference Chair for UMVIM, as well as trainers from the Southeastern Jurisdiction of UMVIM.

ECHOThis training will also include a tour of ECHO (Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization) a non-profit, inter-denominational Christian organization located on a demonstration farm in North Fort Myers. ECHO has been assisting a global network of missionaries and development workers since 1981 and is currently serving agricultural workers in 180 countries. For more information, please visit their Web site: www.echonet.org.

Please note: Due to space constraints, this training will be limited to 40 people. Register online at: www.flumc.org/UMVI
Welcome New District Disaster Recovery Coordinator
It is my joy to introduce to you Jeff Campbell, our new District Disaster Coordinator for the East Central District. Jeff has a passion for serving others and brings with him a wealth of experience in disaster preparedness and recover. He is a member of Sanlando UMC and looking forward to leading and equipping our churches in Disaster Response. I've asked him to write a short introduction so that you might begin to know his passion for this ministry...

Dr. Wayne D. Wiatt, Superintendent
East Central District, United Methodist Church, Florida Conference

Jeff CampbellHello, everyone. Allow me to introduce myself....my name is Jeff Campbell and I will be stepping into the position of District Disaster Coordinator for the East Central District.  Although this assignment is new to me, being involved in disasters is not. I was living in Kentucky during the Super Tornado outbreak of April 1974. Although neither my house nor my neighborhood was affected, several of my friends' homes were damaged or destroyed by the severe weather. I spent several days helping one of my friend's family dismantle what was left of their home.

In December 1978 winter rains and a frozen ground led to the rising waters of the Kentucky River through Frankfort, the capital city. One of my friend's relative's house was in the midst of this disaster. He and I and a couple of other people managed to get to the house before the flood waters arrived and we were able to remove portions of the family possessions and place them on the friend's flatbed truck. What we couldn't move, we stacked as high as we could, seeing that the flood waters were already entering the first floor. By the time we left the house, we were traveling through thigh-high river water. The water had also reached the axle on the truck.

During the hurricane season of 2005 my family and I spent quite a few days without power on separate occasions as Charlie, Floyd, and Jeanne came through our community. In May 2006, I was part of a team from my church that went on a Mission trip to Biloxi and Gulfport, Mississippi. We spent 5 days removing damaged building products and ruined furniture and furnishings from several residences. In August 2008, I led a 3-person team in Moore Haven in South Florida assessing damages as a result of Tropical Storm Fay.

I have experienced disasters to some degree in the first person as well as volunteering well after the event. I plan to write a column for this periodical regularly and I would appreciate any feedback you wish to supply. I would like to address issues of concern, tips for preparedness, or whatever format may develop. My stated role is to provide coordination between the churches of our district and the district superintendent during times of crises. I also wish to help bring a sense of preparedness to the members of our district. I hope this column will help achieve those purposes.
Congregational Transformation in the District
Visual Appeal by Janet Earls, Chair, District CT Team

Janet EarlsEach month the District Congregational Transformation Team has been putting a challenge out to the churches. The first was about signage on the church property as the first opportunity to help our newcomers. The second, we challenged about greeters and ushers and being a friendly, approachable church. Now we want to have you assess your visual appeal. Are we being good stewards of what we have been blessed with? There are lots of questions. Your church is being challenged to take an honest assessment when asking questions in this article.

We know from social interaction, business, and marketing that first impressions are important. What is a visitor's first impression as they are checking out the church? It might be through your website. What is that like? Is it easy to navigate? Does the site have a feel that is representative of the church? Warm and inviting? Modern and crisp? Is it up-to-date or does it show events marketed that have already passed? The topic of websites could be an article on its own. Navigation is the primary concern as well as not too cluttered.  [Continue reading]

Summer Nutrition for Children
Be a feeding site during the summer for children who are on the free lunch program during the school year. Local churches serve the meals to children and keep records on number of children fed. You do not have to do the administration or food preparation. There are still slots for this summer in many locations. Lunch can be combined with activities for the children. Changing a seldom-used church baseball field into a community park transformed the community around Trinity United Methodist Church in Seville. It also changed the way church members see themselves in their community.

The Rev. Nelson Bonilla, pastor of the ethnically diverse church, says construction of the park and its three soccer fields helped meet the evolving needs of the church's membership and surrounding community.

Earth Day is April 22, 2010

Earth Day - April 22As people of faith, we United Methodist want to be at the forefront of celebrating our Creator's handiwork and promoting the most thoughtful stewardship of God's creative work.  Most are aware that April is "earth month" and "earth day" is April 22nd.  You may already have plans to celebrate on Rural Life Sunday, but your Florida Conference Creation Care Task Force urges you to embrace the entire month with activities, study and devotional time that will bring people closer to God and all that God created.  The task force is working to seek out, create and provide resources to facilitate local church.

A variety of creation-related topics and activities can be downloaded for free from: http://www.ncccusa.org/news/100106earthday2010.html.  We urge congregations to take advantage of these resources to claim that creation is God's and that the people of God are leaders in the stewardship of the earth.
Ecumenical Training in Tampa on April 19-22
All are welcome to three days of prayer, lectures, seminars and network-building

Witnesses to the World! is the theme of the annual National Workshop on Christian Unity, April 19-22, 2010 at the Tampa Hyatt Regency, building on the risen Christ's charge to the apostles that they are "witnesses to these things." (Luke 24.48). The three days of prayer, lectures, seminars and network-building is open to all who are ecumenically minded. Heading the program are Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori as preacher at the opening prayer service, Catholic Archbishop Wilton Gregory as keynoter, and Rev. Dr. Bruce Chilton as bible study leader. Chilton will explore the development of the Eucharist in the New Testament as the gathering point of the church's unity. Wednesday of the event is devoted to strategizing about local and regional ecumenism. The General Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns is an official sponsor of the event. Rev. Betty Gamble, GCCUIC Associate General Secretary, coordinates a new, United Methodist ecumenical network (UMEIT; see below). The Workshop is the only ecumenical training event officially recognized by the church bodies involved in the ecumenical movement. United Methodists have historically played a major role in the NWCU.
