Wholeness for our Clergy, Congregations, and Communities
East Central District NewsletterMay 2010

Dear Michelle,

Yesterday, May 6 was the 59th Annual National Day of Prayer. I saw a Facebook Gathering for a 24 Hour Prayer Vigil, and no doubt millions united in prayer at thousands of events around the world. The theme for this year is "Prayer for Such a Time as This" and is based on the verse from Nahum 1:7 which states: "The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him."

Most of us seek to make prayer a daily part of our lives, but not until a crisis comes, do we sometimes realize the power behind the statement: "Where two or three are gathered...!"

About a month ago, Easter Weekend to be exact, my wife Ramona and I experienced a personal health scare that really rocked our world. After we dealt with the reality of a potentially serious diagnosis, our first response was to call on friends and family to pray with us and for us. I don't know why, but I was overwhelmed at the support and prayers lifted up on our behalf.  Friends called friends, and within 24 hours, we felt as if hundreds of people were lifting us up for strength, healing, and hope...for such a time as this!

Isn't it amazing how God works through the power of prayer? And for us, in our time of need, it seemed to be an exponential response. The initial concern turned out to be not as serious as we were first led to believe, but it didn't minimize our thankfulness for God's strength and comfort in our time of need.

Thomas a Kempis, known almost entirely for composing or compiling a manual of spiritual advice known as The Imitation of Christ, writes these words:

When God bestows Spiritual comfort, receive it with a grateful heart; but remember that it comes of God's free gift, and not of your own merit. Do not be proud, nor over joyful, nor foolishly presumptuous; rather, be the more humble for this gift, more cautious, and more prudent in all your doings, for this hour will pass, and temptation will follow it. When comfort is withdrawn, do not immediately  despair, but humbly and patiently await the will of Heaven; for God is able to restore you to a consolation even richer than before. This is nothing new or strange to those who know the ways of God, for the great Saints and Prophets of old often experienced these changes. ...Indeed, the temptation that precedes is often a sign of comfort to follow. For heavenly comfort is promised to those who have been tried and tempted."To him who overcomes," says God, "I will give to eat of the Tree of Life."

Special Kudos to Flagler Beach UMC!
Flagler Beach UMC
Flagler Beach UMC

A recent report from Pastor Doug Swan shared some exciting things that are happening at Flagler Beach!  Nearly $2000 was raised to help their sister Cuban Church procure a house for a parsonage and worship purposes.  With Revival Services in February, "Youth with a Mission" performance of the gospel and two church leaders attending the women's Walk to Emmaus retreat there has been lots of evidence of God's work among the congregation!  Their attendance is growing and giving is up for 2010!  Pastor Swan credits this work to the lay leaders who are open to partnering with God through prayer to see things happen through their congregation for the benefit growing God's Kingdom in Flagler Beach.  This congregation participated in a ReFocusing Network during 2007 through 2009.  Go God!

Is God Calling YOU to Mission This Summer?
Celebrate Jesus Mission in St. Petersburg July 17-24, 2010

Celebrate JesusIf you have not been on mission in a while, we encourage you to revisit this possibility. As we move from year to year, God seems to lead us in areas in which we as an organization and we as a church need to "s t r e t c h". It was diversity of faith communities in the DeLand Mission in 2007, diversity of nationalities and races in the Southeast in 2008, a revisit of the Northeast communities and a breakthrough in the Southwest in 2009.

This year's mission takes us back to the St. Petersburg area where Celebrate Jesus had one of its first missions in 2000.  This year we have joining us a total of five (5) Hispanic communities that did not exist in 2000.  Our missions represent our communities. We continue to see God at work in ways that only God can provide.  We serve a God of surprises!! Just about the time we think we have God all figured out - POP - God shows up where we least expect.

As we continue to serve Him, He shows us new places that need the light of Christ to shine brightly. Consider coming on mission again this summer and have your journey lightened as you again are yoked with Christ for the week, serving where only God leads.  We have missed you!  Applications are available at www.cjmission.org.

Participants stay in dorm-style lodges with bunk beds.  Cost is $55 per person and includes lodging, three meals (dinner, breakfast and lunch) and all training materials.  Trainers include Sue Macchiarella, Florida Conference Chair for UMVIM, as well as trainers from the Southeastern Jurisdiction of UMVIM.

Congregational Excellence in the District
Kim ShockleyCoffee Time = Missional Time
by Kim Shockley

I was visiting a church several years ago and arrived in time for the fellowship time before the worship service.  Within a few seconds of walking in the front door I was greeted and ushered to the hall where coffee and snacks were available.  The gentleman who ushered me introduced me to a few other people, and within a minute, I was learning all about the welcoming ministry of this congregation; I even received a short tour of the church!  Needless to say - I was blown away by the selfless attitude of this gentleman who was willing to look for the guest/visitor/stranger and offer hospitality!

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that your congregation's fellowship time, whenever it is offered, is a time that should not be focused on your congregation!  I truly believe that if every individual within a congregation took on the responsibility of offering simple hospitality - a friendly hello, smile, or handshake, then our churches would be full to overflowing!  Your Coffee Hour is the perfect place to begin practicing this kind of hospitality.

As an experiment, the next time you attend the fellowship time or coffee hour, look around to determine what is happening.  Is everyone engaged in a conversation?  Are there obvious guests/visitors/strangers?.  [Continue reading]

On The Menu. . .   A Meal of Solidarity
Stand in solidarity with the majority of the world's population. Our diet is vastly different than much of the world. Half the world's population lives on $2 a day or less. Meal options are few, and portions are small.

As an act of solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world, we encourage you to join us in eating a meal of similar portion size and content -  black beans and rice. While this seems meager by American standards, it represents diets in the broad middle of the world's population.

Please join us in experiencing what life is like for the other half of the world. A portion of the cost of this meal will go toward the Annual Conference Offering to Haiti and End Childhood Hunger.
Do You Have A Passion for Prison Ministry?

Prison Ministry
The 2009 Florida Annual Conference adopted a resolution calling for the expansion of prison ministry. Nearly 100,000 men and women are incarcerated and in the custody of the Florida Department of Corrections; 80 percent of them are reported by the Department to have alcohol and drug abuse problems. In an effort to minister to this growing segment of society, a task force is being developed to coordinate the efforts of churches throughout the conference as they minister to the prison population.

If you or your church are presently involved or want to get involved in prison ministry, please tell us the details.  Send information to  Bob Crowley, EC District Prison Ministry Chairperson, at rcrowley6@cfl.rr.com; and Tammy Fisher, Florida Conference staff, at tfisher@flumc.org
Disaster Preparedness from DRC: Jeff Campbell
Disaster Recovery
As so often happens, there are so many things to write about that I simply don't know where to start. When this occurs it gets the best of so many of us that we just don't do ANYTHING. Well, I want to remind you that hurricane season is approaching and you really should do SOMETHING.

Is your emergency food pantry well stocked? If not then it's time to head to the store. Grocery stores will soon be putting out hurricane guides. While getting your supplies tart looking for those and take one home and go over it carefully.

How about clothing? Instead of throwing away those old grungy duds, how about placing them in a garbage bag and store them where you can get to them once the storm has passed? Those clothes you wear while cleaning up debris can get mighty filthy in a hurry. And have you ever tried to get them thoroughly cleaned? [Continue Reading]
Hospitality Volunteers needed at LEC in Leesburg
The United Methodist Life Enrichment Retreat Center in Leesburg, is looking for some outstanding volunteers to help us with our ministry of Christian hospitality to retreat groups.  We need folks who are friendly, and enjoy serving others.  Our need is for front desk and dining room hospitality.

At the front desk you will answer phones, greet people arriving to the center, help us prepare for groups by doing signs, organizing room keys, etc.  Dining room hosts welcome folks into the dining room, help those who need help going through the meal line, help guests with their trays to return them to the dish room, and wipe down tables at the end of the meal.

All these positions are vital to helping our retreat guests feel welcome.  Most of this service will be on weekends, but a number of weekday options are also possible.  If you come from a distance, and can stay for a weekend, we will provide a room and meals.

Please consider this opportunity and give us a call at 352-787-0313 and ask for Jess or e-mail jschload@flumc.org.

Community Building Event: reBUILD HAITI
Response to Haiti Earthquake: June 13th from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Haitian Mission

reBUILD HAITIOver the past month we have been moved and troubled deeply by the difficulties faced by folks living in the poorest nation in our hemisphere struggling with such unspeakable devastation.  So far the best way to help has been to donate funds.  Church members have responded generously throughout our district, raising thousands of dollars for those in Haiti and creating awareness of the need.

Efforts at First UMC of Winter Park to raise funds and awareness led to meeting with International Child Care (ICC) Board Member Rev. Lynne Austin and Rev. Eliantus Valmyr of Emmanuel Haitian Mission about ways to build community among our churches here in the East Central District to help rebuild communities in Haiti.

We are planning a very special event to which Rev. Eliantus Valmyr and Rev. Bob Bushong invite you and your congregations.  We hope you will join us in this effort on June 13, 2010. [Click Here] to register your attendance.
Summer Nutrition for Children
Be a feeding site during the summer for children who are on the free lunch program during the school year. Local churches serve the meals to children and keep records on number of children fed. You do not have to do the administration or food preparation. There are still slots for this summer in many locations. Lunch can be combined with activities for the children. To see if your church qualifies or if there is another site nearby that needs assistance.

A Heart Transformed Can Change the World!

In this powerful true story, based directly on the private journals of John and Charles Wesley, we glimpse the private struggles of one man who would go on to found the Methodist movement - and another who would become one of the most prolific and beloved hymn writers of history.  Together, they would transform the face of England with revolutionary ministries to the poor and downtrodden, creating a movement that laid the groundwork for the eventual abolition of slavery. Preparing Volunteer Teams For Haiti
Leaders from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) have been in Haiti to meet with Methodist Church leaders, to plan for sending teams and to look at priority projects.  The infrastructure in Haiti is still very fragile. Working through UMVIM is the best way to optimize the assistance your team will be able to give, to ensure you do not tax an already severely overtaxed system (considerations such as food, supplies, transportation, trash disposal, etc.) and to ensure the safety of your team. This is a very unique and challenging setting even for experienced mission teams.

Criteria for UMVIM teams are as follows:
1. Teams should be no more that 8-12 members.
2. The team leader should have previous experience working in Haiti.
3. Team leader must have UMVIM Team leader training.  (Next training May 14-15, LaBelle, FL)
4. All team members must have the necessary immunizations recommended by the CDC.
5. Early Response Training (ERT) is not necessary but is helpful for team members.

UMCOR has three staff people who will be coordinating the work including a Volunteer Team Coordinator.  They will be in place starting April 1.  Workteams are expected to begin work Easter week 2010.  Work teams can register at www.umvim.org. Going through UMVIM will mean meals and housing through the Methodist guest house in Port Au Prince; work projects, building supplies and logistics being prepared for your team; UMVIM insurance to cover your team; translators provided to work with your team.  All teams will be asked to hire at least two Haitians to help with the work.

If you are planning a team and need to find someone with the team leader qualifications of having been on a mission trip to Haiti and having been through the VIM team leader training, please contact Marilyn Beecher or Florida Conference VIM. We may be able to match you up with someone who could co-lead a team - your local church team leader can still provide the coordination of your group and with on site supervision of the work while the "experienced" co-leader could assist with logistics.
