Salty Service Clergy Meeting @ Destiny Foundation in Orlando September 24, 9am - 1pm
Dear Michelle,
With the deaths last week of Ed McMahon, Farah Fawcett, and Michael Jackson, along with the extensive documentaries of their lives in the media, I had to stop and ask the question, "What in my life would be worth reporting to the world? Would any of my accomplishments or failures be of interest to the news media? Having just turned 54 in June, I am at that point in my life where there is a good bit of reflection taking place as it relates to life goals, accomplishments, failures, and future hopes and dreams. Lately, I am asking myself the question, "Could someone look at my life and see it as a "Case for Christ?" (J. Ortberg) Having preached recently on the "Methodist Way" and the Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations, I have started focusing on what I like to call in "NCD Speak" as my personal Minimal Factor, Salty Service. I know many of our congregations are struggling with how to measure Salty Service in their congregations and maybe you are on a personal level as well! Jesus was clear that his followers are to be servants: "Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant . . . just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve." (Matthew 20:26-28) Service flows naturally and inescapably from the teachings and example of Jesus. "Let me tell you why you are here," says Jesus. "You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness?" (Salty Service from Florida Conference Office of Congregational Transformation, Matthew 5:13 The Message). A number of our congregations have already instituted the laminated bookmarks in the offering plate (click here) to try and track the number of times people have focused on serving others throughout the week. A good question to ask ourselves is this:" How do I invest my God given, unique blessings serving others and God's purposes?" As I asked myself that question this past month, I had to admit that my "investing" was rather skimpy. Destiny Foundation, (click here) a multi-faceted Compassionate Care Center, 150 West Michigan Street, Orlando, is the site of our next District Clergy Meeting on September 24 from 9am - 1pm. We will hear about many possibilities throughout our District to be involved in Salty Service from Halifax Urban Ministries to Destiny House to Summer Day Camps in under-served neighborhoods and how you might help lead your congregation in Salty Service. Our Clergy gathering on the 24th will include fellowship, worship, welcoming our new clergy in the District, information on Charge Conferences (Cluster Type this year!), and some time for "Holy Conferencing" about Salty Service and our call together to be in community. I'll be on vacation from July 2-July 26. I hope you are planning some intentional time for renewal as well!.
I Love Being Your District Superintendent,
Wayne 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

Kirkman and Ebenezer Churches who merged last month now have a new name... Solid Rock UMC. Dr. Walker Walker is the pastor.
Zellwood (Rev. Nadine Richmond); Christ to the Nations (Rev. Jaime Faberlle), Solid Rock (Dr. Walker Walker), Emmanuel Haitian (Rev. Eliantus Valmyr) are all hosting Day Camps this summer supported by our Church and Community Connection Ministry (Rev. Marilyn Beecher). Thanks for the Salty Service in your neighborhoods!
Kudos to First UMC Port Orange, Faith UMC Orlando, First UMC Geneva and Pierson UMC who sent groups of lay folks with their pastors to the Focused Living Retreat on June 26th. This was the first step of their ReFocusing process which brings lay people to a fuller understanding of each one's sense of God-given direction for life and ministry! 30 lay people from these four churches participated!
Reeves Memorial (Rev. Linda Tice) who will host the first Satellite Office of our United Methodist Children's Home for Foster Care. FUMCH is planning to have a number of Satellite Offices throughout the state and we are proud that the East Central District and Reeves Memorial will be the first Satellite Office in the Florida Conference.
The Chancel Choir of First UMC Orlando has been given a prestigious invitation to be a part of the National Convocation of The Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts meeting for the National Convocation the week of July 12 in Orlando. The featured service begins at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14 in the Sanctuary of First United Methodist, Orlando. The Chancel Choir and members of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra will provide beloved choruses from the masters. Creative liturgies will inspire and Safiyah Fosua, Director of Preaching for the General Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church, will give the homily. The service is free to the community and is sponsored by the "Friends of Music."
Do you have a ministry, mission, or accomplishment that we can recognize in the EC News? Send it to ds-ec@flumc.org so we can brag on you!

| Thank You Annual Conference Radical Hospitality Volunteers! |
On behalf of Bishop Whitaker and the Florida Annual Conference, we would like to express our deep gratitude for your volunteer presence at our Annual Conference held at Bethune Cookman University June 10-13.
Your graciousness and joyful, willing spirit were true gifts to all who attended the 2009 Annual Conference. We have heard so much about the variety of ways in which the hospitality volunteers in the red vests were true blessings in the lives of many. Whether it was greeting at the PAC doors, shuttle drop off, parking lots, greeting at Wendall Holmes for the Ministry Expo, ushering for worship services, distributing materials, answering questions, driving buses, or countless other ways you helped, you can trust that the smallest acts of kindness did not go unnoticed! You taught us much about the importance of hospitality and of receiving others with a joyful spirit.
We are so very grateful for your generosity of time and energy, sincerity and grace.
In Christ's Service,
Wayne Janet Wayne Wiatt Janet Kelley East Central District Superintendent East Central District Lay Leader

2009 Annual Conference Offering - East Angola, Africa |
Thank you to the 36 East Central District Churches who generously gave a total $16,884 toward the Annual Conference Offering!
Nearly all of these churches met or exceeded their $1 per member goal as encouraged by Bishop Whitaker and Rev. Wiatt. To date these 36 EC Churches make up 19.57% of the total offering dollars collected, total AC Offering is $86,275. The East Central District goal is $45,609 (the Number of Members in all EC District Congregations - reported on the 2008 year end statistical report). It is our hope that when the remaining 47 EC Churches submit their Annual Conference offering we will reach or exceed our $45,609 goal. The Annual Conference offering is focused toward initiatives that are a part of our partnership with the United Methodist Church in East Angola. These monies will strengthen the church in East Angola by developing leadership for the future, providing funding for education at the School of Theology and the Colegio. It will also be used to enable Armando and Icel Rodriguez to serve as missioners to Angola for the 2009-2012 year, along with providing grants to churches to assist them in traveling to East Angola to build relationships with partner churches. If every church contributes $1 for each member of the congregation, the results would be transformative for the people in Angola.
Thank you for your continued support and outstanding leadership toward this goal. |

Green jobs and green living. Global warming. Climate change. Those are just some of the buzzwords often heard in the political and social conversation about today's environmental issues. But what's the Christian contribution to the debate and the response to those issues? This year's Florida Annual Conference Event focused in large part on that question and the ways all Christians are called to actively care for and be in relationship with God's creation.

| Is Your Dirt Healthy? |
Congregational Transformation in the EC District by Kim Shockley

I have always been a nature buff. My earliest recollections of family time are of walks in the woods on Sunday afternoons in central Pennsylvania. My parents were great "birders" so we were not just walking in the woods, we were watching and listening and stopping and identifying God's wonders! Our family also had wonderful gardens around our house - flowers and vegetables - beautiful and practical. I learned a lot about soil and seeds and the correct usage of them. As children, it often fell to my sister and brother and I to help clear the stones and other debris from the yard so that the soil was at its best. It is no wonder that one of my favorite parables is Jesus' relating the types of soil and what happens to the seeds that were planted in those soils. My hope is that our local churches are good soil - rich with nutrients and sunshine and water - so that when we plant seeds and God brings the growth we will be healthy! Summertime in Florida it is a great time to evaluate the health of our soil. Many of our congregations breathe a little easier, so perhaps we can reflect a bit on how healthy we really are. Jeff Stiggins, the director of our Conference Office of Congregational Transformation, encourages us to do this with our small groups and classes. We define "Intentional Discipling" as a group of 2 and 12 people that meet at least monthly to share a common commitment to grow in their discipleship, touch base with Scripture, discuss how to apply it to their lives, give one another honest feedback, and pray together. I realize that not all of our groups meet these criteria, but some that don't could - with just a little bit of intentionality toward the criteria just mentioned. How do the majority of the groups in your congregation measure up to these criteria? What could be done differently in order to move in that direction? Jeff's latest blog entry offers a slightly different look at the 5 Practices of the Methodist Way that captivated me - especially as it relates to our own brokenness and Intentional Discipling. Scripture reminds us . . . . [Read More] |
| Don't just "LAY" there . . . |
|
Do you have a passion for getting your congregation into the surrounding community and transforming your congregation to be more missional? Do you want to be part of a movement of laity who leave a legacy for future generations?
As in the Acts church, Bishop Whitaker has initiated an effort to mobilize the laity to breathe new spiritual life into the churches of the Florida Conference. He has asked Russ Graves to lead this effort across the Conference. To do this, laity who have a passion for and a commitment to extending God's Kingdom here on earth will need to come forward. If you feel God calling you to something greater, plan to attend an orientation meeting for Lay Leadership Training this August. This 1½ hour orientation gathering led by Russ Graves and Kim Shockley will introduce laity to the Lay Leadership training to be launched in the East Central District on Friday and Saturday, October 16th & 17th.
To learn more and to ask questions, laity are invited to attend one of two Lay Leadership orientation sessions.
Sunday, August 23 from 5:00 - 6:30 pm at First UMC, Port Orange Thursday, August 27 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm, Location TBA - Orlando area I am excited about this effort, and I pray that you will feel called to attend an orientation session and, hopefully, want to become actively involved in extending God's Kingdom throughout the local churches of the East Central District. Please join me in prayer for this effort and for Russ Graves who has come forward in faith to answer God's call to lead this effort.
With joy for the journey,
Janet Kelley East Central District Lay Leader

| East Central District to help collect supplies for the UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, Louisiana |
First UMC of Winter Park Celebrates Anniversary by Giving Back
Dr. Bob Bushong, Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church of Winter Park (FUMCWP), announced today that as part of a year-long celebration of its 125th anniversary, the church is issuing a district-wide challenge to help give back to people and families in need. The church is asking for other area churches in the East Central District to help collect supplies for the UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, Louisiana.
"This Supply Challenge is being issued by FUMCWP, but is whole-heartedly support by my office," said Wayne Wiatt, District Superintendent of the East Central District. "We are looking for all of our East Central District churches to start collecting supplies in January 2010. The collection will run from January 2010 culminating in August 2010 with a special collection day and celebration at my office! We want to fill a truck about the size of a 26' moving truck with the much needed supplies"
Once all the churches have completed their collection campaigns in early August 2010, a special day-long "Supply Challenge Wrap-Up" will be held on Saturday, August 28th, 2010, with lots of food and fellowship opportunities as all the churches gather to load the truck that will make the trip to UMCOR Sager Brown (website), where volunteers from across the US assemble relief supply kits to ship wherever they are needed around the world.
The supplies that are collected in Central Florida will eventually be shipped around the world to help people in dire situations," commented Dr. Bushong. "With the poor world economy and the potential for the many natural disasters that have been seen recently, these supplies will be a welcome commodity wherever they are shipped."
First United Methodist Church of Winter Park is on the move to make a difference through Jesus Christ.

| Health & Wholeness Ministries |
Does your congregation emphasize the importance of the whole person and the interdependence of the physical, emotional, and spiritual components of each person? This is the basis for health and wholeness ministries. This may be led by a health and wholeness team, or a parish nurse (community health nurse), or may be fragmented under different areas. We would like to identify a key individual at each congregation that can share information about programs and needs. Examples of programs and ministries might be physical fitness programs, emergency preparedness, health education, support when in need, referrals etc. Please contact Judy Davis parish nurse at First UMC Apopka judyadavis@embarqmail.com or Betsy McKeeby parish nurse at First UMC Winter Park.
Are you prepared? When we think about our health, this is an important question to evaluate readiness for what we could be facing. Everyone who is traveling is advised to verify readiness of the vehicle as well as taking supplies that might be needed. Planning can increase our chance of safety as well as decrease our risk of inconveniences.
Families are also advised to have a plan for emergencies that might impact them at home. Two major areas are weather emergencies and potentially incapacitating illnesses such as the flu. Since June 1 begins the hurricane season for Florida, it is a good time to review preparations. Have a current sheet with contact information and medical summary including medications available at all times . . . [Read More] |

| Podcast Series: 7 Myths of the UMC |
From Sandy Jackson, GBOD
Director of Connectional Laity Development
[Click Here] for a series of podcasts that have been recorded around the topic of "7 Myths of the United Methodist Church". Each podcast (except the first) has a guest.
Craig Miller, a leader at the General Board of Discipleship at the United Methodist Church argues that there are seven myths about why the Methodist churches...and all "mainline" Christian churches in America for that matter...are shrinking. Craig tackles the first of these myths, that "Big Churches are Bad". Perhaps, according to Craig, the big churches have simply learned to be relevant.
Guests include Tyrone Gordon, Dottie Escobedo-Frank, Vance Ross, Rudy Rasmus, Linda McCoy, and Duane Anders. Each podcast last from 20 to 30 minutes. The podcasts were produced by the Riverside District in the Cal-Pac Annual Conference.
