Wholeness for our Clergy, Congregations, and Communities
East Central District Newsletter March 2010

Dear Michelle,

Salty Service

Friday, March 12th  will be "Salty Service Training Day" for the East Central District from 9 am to 4 pm at First UMC, Deland [Register Here]. Clergy and Mission Committees are urged to attend to hear Dr. Paul Chilcoate and other dynamic leaders share their expertise on our Wesleyan call to reaching out to those in need through Servant Ministries. From John Wesley's ministry in the Coal Mines of England to our current relief efforts in Haiti, United Methodists lead the way in helping to meet the needs of the poor and marginalized around the world.

As of Friday, February 19th, generous United Methodists and people of goodwill across the country and around the world contributed more than $12 million directly to UMCOR for our relief and recovery work in Haiti following the devastating January 12th earthquake. Donations sent to conference treasurer offices, once processed, will add to the tally. In the Florida Conference alone, contributions to our Florida Conference Treasurer have surpassed $400,000. Most Methodists have given directly to UMCOR and all of these funds go directly to the relief effort. Our Connectional Giving underwrites the organizational structure for UMCOR enabling them to provide transportation and coordination of relief efforts with other agencies.

The East Central District is organizing Mission Teams to work in Haiti with an informational meeting taking place on Saturday, March 20th from 10 am to 12 noon at Emmanuel Haitian in Orlando., 701 W. Concord Street, Orlando FL 32805. I invite you to send your Mission Coordinators to this important meeting to learn how your church might better respond with "hands on ministry" to Haiti in the very near future.

We are encouraging a partnership with Grace Children's Hospital in Port Au Prince, which is already designated as an Advance Special through UMCOR.  There will be a District Wide opportunity to hear about Grace Children's Hospital on Sunday, June 13th at Emmanuel Haitian UMC, 701 W Concord St., Orlando, FL 32805 2-5pm.   Rev. Lynne Austin, Board Member and Volunteer with Grace Children's Hospital will be the Speaker. These recent video links on You Tube will give you a glance of the ministry at Grace Children's Hospital along with their recovery efforts after the Earthquake.

"Religion and Politics: Beyond Offense and Tolerance, A Meditation on 1 Corinthians 13"
Monday, March 15 at  First UMC, Winter Park from 9:30 am - 12 noon

Dean Jan Love
We live in an era of political polarization when shouting matches often drown out genuine conversation and reasoned discussion. At times our churches and the wider Christian community suffer divisions so deep that we hardly recognize each other as followers of Christ. Is it possible to hold true to our basic convictions without being offensive to others? Is it possible to engage our differences constructively rather than simply tolerating those with whom we passionately disagree? This session will focus on bible study as a means of addressing the challenge of moving beyond offense and tolerance.

Church voluntarily closes, paves way for new growth
By Jenna De Marco | Jan. 7, 2010

Grace UMC OrlandoMembers of Grace United Methodist Church in Orlando may well be remembered for living up to the church's name. They voted to close the 50-year-old church and sell the property to Orange County Public Schools for reconstruction and expansion of adjacent Evans High School "after it became clear a financial crossroads had arrived," said the Rev. Dr. Wayne Wiatt, superintendent of the East Central District. Members made the decision across a period of about six months - far less time than the typical two or three years needed by most churches, Wiatt said. The final service was Dec. 27.

Several factors, including decreased membership, contributed to the relatively quick decision to close. Chief among them was an opportunity to sell the church property for about $1.3 million to Orange County Public Schools. The school system needed more space for reconstruction and expansion of adjacent Evans High School, a landmark in a community that has experienced many cultural shifts in the past 50 years.

"The irony is that Evans High School housed them for a period of time (when the church launched), and we are returning a favor," said the Rev. Dr. Walker Walker, pastor at Grace and Solid Rock United Methodist churches. "Probably, we are making a greater sacrifice, but we are touching so many lives - parents, children and the community, which stands to benefit greatly from that sacrifice."[Read Article]
Foundation Offers Financial Seminar for Clergy
FUMFApril 29 - May 1, 2010

Beginning this spring the Foundation will add a new financial workshop to its educational curriculum with the introduction of "Now You Tell Me:  A Clergy Guide to Personal and Church Finance."  According to Foundation President Tom Marston, the course is designed to help clergy acquire financial management skills that are sorely missing in seminary training but are absolutely essential to success.

The seminar is an intensive three-day workshop set for April 29 - May 1 in Orlando.  It will lay out the basics of personal and church finance, including how to develop a theology of money.  Topics covered include fundamentals of finance and financial planning, church finance, stewardship and the cultural challenges facing clergy and the church.  Workshop leaders include Foundation and Conference staff and outside professionals with wide-ranging expertise on financial matters.  Continuing Education credits will be offered.

"Because the sessions on personal finance impact families," Marston said, "we encourage couples to attend this seminar together."  Cost is $195 for couples and $125 for single attendees.  Tuition covers overnight accommodations, workshop sessions and materials and most meals.  Under special circumstances, scholarships are available.

The seminar will be held at The Marriott Courtyard in the Marriott Village at Lake Buena Vista, 8623 Vineland Avenue, Orlando, 32821.

Community Building Event: reBUILD HAITI
Response to Haiti Earthquake: June 13th from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Haitian Mission

reBUILD HAITIOver the past month we have been moved and troubled deeply by the difficulties faced by folks living in the poorest nation in our hemisphere struggling with such unspeakable devastation.  So far the best way to help has been to donate funds.  Church members have responded generously throughout our district, raising thousands of dollars for those in Haiti and creating awareness of the need.

Efforts at First UMC of Winter Park to raise funds and awareness led to meeting with International Child Care (ICC) Board Member Rev. Lynne Austin and Rev. Eliantus Valmyr of Emmanuel Haitian Mission about ways to build community among our churches here in the East Central District in order to help rebuild communities in Haiti.

We are planning a very special event to which Rev. Eliantus Valmyr and Rev. Bob Bushong invite you and your congregations.  We hope you will join us in this effort on June 13, 2010.
