East Central District Mission Trip to Rwanda July 7-17, 2010 At our recent District Clergy Meeting that focused on Salty Service, Reverend Greg Jenks, an Elder in the North Carolina Conference, challenged us to help meet the needs of orphaned children in Africa. Greg is the Founder and Executive Director for ZOE Ministry whose primary focus, the "Giving Hope Empowerment Project" in Rwanda, is addressing the HIV/AIDS Pandemic. [Zoe Ministry is a General Advance Special of the United Methodist Church.] The HIV/AIDS pandemic leaves new orphans in Africa every 14 seconds, making the number of children in need overwhelming to those who want to give love and care. This ministry surrounds the oldest children in each orphaned family with the resources and encouragement they need to succeed as they care for their younger siblings. In the first year of assistance, the children generally achieve food security and within three years, learn life skills to sustain their families and those around them, allowing them to live faithful, empowered lives. The promise of Jeremiah 29:11 provides the foundation for ZOE Ministry: "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord; plans to prosper you and not to harm you; plans to give you hope and a future." Epiphanie Mujawimana, founder of the "Giving Hope" methodology and a survivor of the Rwandan Genocide of 1994, will join Greg Jenks in the East Central District Sunday afternoon, November 15 (Location TBA) to share with us personally about ZOE Ministry. Our District Mission trip will include homebuilding projects and extensive visitation with the orphans of Rwanda. We will learn how ZOE Ministry enables children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS Pandemic in Africa to achieve independence and self sufficiency. The dates for the Mission Trip are July 7-17, 2010. The cost will be $3,000 per missioner which will include round trip airfare to Africa as well as lodging, food and travel while in Rwanda. Joe MacLaren (University Carillon), Dwayne Craig (Tuskawilla), and David Williamson (Spring of Life) have already committed to join me in traveling with our District Mission Team. This will leave only 10 openings for the team. If you are interested as clergy or laity, please let me know as soon as possible. We need to formalize the Mission Team roster by November 1, 2009. To sign up for the trip or for additional information you may contact me at ds-ec@flumc.org or 407-403-4367. If you have never been on a Mission Trip to a third world country, this is a wonderful opportunity to explore the work of the United Methodist Church, especially as we address the needs of children. Travel Information: Rwanda is one of the safest countries in which to travel in Africa. The Country sits 3,000 feet above sea level with mountainous terrain known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills." July is the dry season for Rwanda with an average temperature of 80 degrees. Tea and Coffee are the predominate exports and Rwanda is known for its gorilla habitats.
I Love Being Your District Superintendent, Wayne 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

In many African countries, orphaned children are raising their brothers and sisters due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In response, ZOE Ministry is sharing the Love of Christ and giving hope to vulnerable children in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, and Rwanda. |

Methodists, Lutherans, Catholics mark historic agreement's anniversary
CHICAGO - Representatives of the Methodist, Lutheran, and Catholic traditions will gather in Chicago on Oct. 1 to mark the tenth anniversary of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, the most significant agreement between the Protestant groups and the Catholic Church since the Reformation. The declaration outlines how sinful human beings are forgiven and brought into a right relationship with God.
"For hundreds of years, the issue of justification by faith divided Catholics and Protestants," said Bishop Gregory Palmer, president of The United Methodist Church's Council of Bishops. "This agreement celebrates consensus on the basic truths of the doctrine of justification."
Signed in October 1999 by the Lutheran World Federation and the Vatican, the declaration says, "Together we confess: By grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping and calling us to good works."
The World Methodist Council, of which The United Methodist Church is a member, affirmed the agreement in 2006.
A service of celebration will take place on Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at Old St. Patrick's Church, Chicago. Cardinal Francis George, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will lead the service. Bishop Palmer and Bishop Sharon Zimmerman Rader are among the representatives of The United Methodist Church. Geoffrey Wainwright of the British Methodist Church will represent the World Methodist Council.
A second celebration will take place on Oct. 31 in Germany. |

Do you have a passion for getting your congregation into the surrounding community and transforming your congregation to be more missional? Do you want to be part of a movement of laity who leave a legacy for future generations?

Congregational Transformation in the EC District
My Summer Vacation by Kim Shockley
I can honestly say that the summer of 2009 has been uniquely different that any other summer in my history! While I have had several other summers dedicated to getting comfortable in a new congregation, I have never had a summer without a congregation to know or be known. So, my husband and I ventured out on the church shopping route. I can honestly say that every worship service among the many that we visited were places where we did meet God. No matter the worship style - God was present in all! For that experience I am very grateful to the pastors and worship leaders and musicians who strive to make that happen.
On the other hand, what I did not experience was any real sense of welcoming or hospitality. Yes, the ushers and greeters were in their places (mostly) and they said hello and handed us worship folders. Yes, a few pastors and people who recognized us waved or stopped to greet us. I can only remember two congregations that asked us for any contact information so that they could follow up with us and only one did (thanks Dr. Rambo!). After several weeks of these experiences we are a little discouraged. There are statistical surveys that tell us folks make up their mind about returning to your church within 10 minutes of arriving in your parking lot. I get that now!!!
I realized that what I really wanted was one lay person to come up to us and say - "Hi, my name is _____. I haven't seen you here before, is there anything I can do to help you this morning?"
Part of my job in Congregational Transformation is to oversee our Mystery Guest process. Lay folks from our EC District congregations go to other churches, fill out a form about their visiting experience, and then mail it back to me. I need to tell you that my experience is very much like theirs have been. Every one of the reports I have received says the same thing - "no one, except those who are supposed to, greeted or welcomed me in any way."
Now - I have to get back to my church shopping because I know that a second chance for some of these congregations may provide a different perspective. Warm up your welcoming smile - there are folks like me out there who really want to belong!

Open Enrollment Live Webcast
October 27 at 10 AM
Our annual Open Enrollment webcast will present details of the benefit plans that are offered to lay and clergy through the Florida Conference. This is an opportunity to learn more about our benefit plans and to introduce our new dental plan. Earlier this month, the conference announced there will be no increase to health insurance premium rates in 2010 [see story here]. The total premiums rates and the clergy "blended rate" will remain the same in 2010.
Open Enrollment is the only time you may make changes to your benefit elections unless you have an IRS approved "change-in-status" event. For eligibility guidelines and to print out the adoption agreement, [click here]. The adoption agreement form is found at the bottom of that page.
If you have questions about the Adoption Agreement, please contact the HR & Benefits department at Benefits@flumc.org.
Adoption agreements for health plan needed
In preparation for our annual Open Enrollment window, the so-called adoption agreements must be signed and returned to the Conference before October 15. A person with the authority to make financial commitments for the church must sign this agreement and fax it back to the conference in order for lay employees at local churches throughout the Florida Conference to be eligible for health insurance and other benefit programs in 2010. The due date, Oct 15, is prior to the health insurance open enrollment window which begins on October 26. If your church has lay employees enrolled in one or more of the benefit plans or your church is considering offering Conference benefit programs to eligible employees anytime in 2010, you must complete the adoption agreement and fax it to Human Resources at 863-688-5189. |

Health & Wholeness Ministries
Does your congregation emphasize the importance of the whole person and the interdependence of the physical, emotional, and spiritual components of each person? This is the basis for health and wholeness ministries. This may be led by a health and wholeness team, or a parish nurse (community health nurse), or may be fragmented under different areas. We would like to identify a key individual at each congregation that can share information about programs and needs. Examples of programs and ministries might be physical fitness programs, emergency preparedness, health education, support when in need, referrals etc. Please contact Judy Davis parish nurse at First UMC Apopka judyadavis@embarqmail.com or Betsy McKeeby parish nurse at First UMC Winter Park |

The Gideons International
A Christian Business and Professional Men's Association
The Gideons are a Missionary Arm of the Evangelical Church. Two men started the Gideon organization in 1899 with the expressed purpose of raising funds to purchase Bibles to place in hotels for the traveling populace. Hearing of this, an Evangelical Church Conference voted to raise the funds required to fulfill the Gideons plan. Gideon have been faithfully placing Bibles since 1908 and have placed over 1.5 Billion copies of God's Word in 190 Countries and translated into 87 different languages.
The need is ever present and the work goes on! Gideons take great joy in sharing the work of the Ministry with congregations such as those of the United Methodist Church. A brief informative message can be given by a dedicated Gideon at the end of a morning or evening Worship Service. We recommend this time as we try not to interrupt a Church's regular order of Worship. This is followed with a free will offering, All of which goes to the procurement and placement of God's word. Gideons also provide personal financial support to Gideons International and pay all of their own expenses.
The Gideons are truly a Missionary arm of your church. For more information on sharing the Gideon Ministry in your congregation, please contact: Fred S. Williams 407-293-1786 or Paul Eggeling at ceggeling@inbox.com, 407-345-1429. |
