Dear Michelle,
Clergy Meeting
Thursday, September 24 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
When I became your District Superintendent, I promised you that we would only gather for two reasons: To learn together and to have fun.
In just a few weeks we will gather for our one and only mandatory Clergy Meeting this fall. (This means there will be a make-up if you can't attend.) Our theme will be "Salty Service" with an emphasis on servant ministries for you and your congregations. We will also have a smattering of Charge Conference and District Business thrown in just because we have to! (I'll make this part as "fun" as possible.)
Our "Order for the Morning" will include time for connecting and re-connecting with each other, worship, sharing, and the introduction of our newest clergy to the EC District. I have invited Zoe Ministries, Destiny Foundation of Central Florida , Halifax Urban Ministries, Church and Community Connection, JFON Justice for Our Neighbors, and the Foster Care ministry of our United Methodist Children's Home to teach us about how we can become more involved in their servant ministries. These will be snap shot presentations with take-aways for you and your congregation.
We are grateful to Destiny Foundation of Central Florida (Scott George), for allowing us to meet in their facility. I thought it would offer you a first hand experience of a multifaceted servant ministry in action. (Reduced Price Grocery Store, Thrift Shop, Social Service Agency, Medical Clinic [Shepherds Hope], and other need based ministries of referral).
I will send you a complete agenda next week with additional opportunities for a tour of Destiny Foundation of Central Florida after our Clergy Meeting or staying around to serve in their food warehouse or even donate blood at the nearby blood bank if your schedule allows.
Please RSVP for the day as we need to get an exact number for set up and lunch (please bring $10 for lunch which includes a donation to Destiny House). If you have not made a reservation, please [click here].
Jesus said, "the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Matthew 28:20)
My hope is that each of us will come away from our time together with a renewed passion for leading our congregations in Salty Service. See you on the 24th!
I Love Being Your District Superintendent,
Wayne 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. |
Charge Conferences to Celebrate
Transformational Grace
We are introducing a new format for the East Central District this fall called Community Charge/Church Conferences. In order to celebrate the ministries in our local congregations, we will gather together geographically for these Conferences. I will preside at all the Conferences and will be joined by Janet Kelley, our East Central District Lay Leader.
On the Florida Conference [Website Home Page], you will find the Fall 2009 Charge/Church Conference Icon which will link you to all the Charge Conference Forms along with the East Central District CC schedule of the date, time and place for your Community Conference. We have designed a schedule that allows us to celebrate with all of the East Central District Churches at fifteen different locations. We are hopeful that the date of your Conference is not in conflict with any other church events as rescheduling may be a bit impractical.
Have questions or need assistance, contact Janet Kelley and Pam Price in the District Office. | |

Kudos & Congratulations!!
New Voluneer for EC District Prison Ministry Coordinator and Liaison to the AC: Robert Crowley (age 70) had a successful career in sales and management in the IT Industry, as well as being an owner of a software company and an IT consulting firm. He has been active inside the Shalom Prison Ministry of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, and is Director of Education of the Stephen Ministry Program there. He has been part of several initiatives with the Orange County Corrections Dept and the Orange County Criminal Justice Dept. He currently sits on the President's Council of Good News Jail and Prison Ministry.
Montverde UMC: Our goal has been to break 60 in worship. Praise be to God, we had 62 this morning (8/23) with 2 new visitors! I can't wait to see how things grow this fall! Also, we now have a Cub Scout pack with 42 new families in it! It is so exciting! Imagine, each week 42 families come to our church for scouting. What a great opportunity to open our doors into the community. Please be in prayer that lives will be changed through this program.
St. Andrews UMC: The Ministry Development Team wanted to reach out to young families in the neighborhood. They decided to offer an after school program one day a week to give moms and dads a break and help children with their school work. Wonderful Wednesdays was born and is a program for children ages Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Last year was our first year and we have had amazing results! A family with four children joined our church and two other families call us their church home. One young man wrote in his journal the very first week, "I am nobody." Since then, through the love and example of the leaders and helpers, he has accepted Jesus in his heart and knows that "he is somebody!"
Servant Evangelism at Venetian Bay UMC July 5th Beach Party: celebrated their first birthday, the least-attended Sunday of the year, and the Fourth of July, by going to the beach on Sunday, July 5th! Around 50 people were there and had a blast! There were many activities, but the best part was the free hot dogs, chips, and cold water that were handed out to hundreds of beach-goers. One lady said tearfully that she had to choose between going to the beach or lunch that day for her kids. They begged her to take her to the beach. She did, not knowing how she was going to feed them. Then, a wonderful church family member offered her and her children free hot dogs, chips, juice, etc., and they were overjoyed. There was also a work team from Flagler that day, without food or much water. Again, a church member noticed their plight, offered food and drink, and they were grateful. We love outreach! |

Justice For Our Neighbors: New Regional Coordinator
Like many others in his small, farming town, Peter had few opportunities. He was newly married and looking forward to starting a family and giving his children the chance to move beyond the toil and struggles that came with life in their small town. But with opportunity scarce, he and his wife decided that Peter would come to the US to work, save up money, and eventually bring his wife over so that they can start a family in a place with more opportunities for them and their children. After saving up money for 8 years (!), he finally had enough money to bring his wife over. The family would be together once again!
This story is not uncommon. This is the story of many immigrants today - many of whom come to our monthly immigration legal clinic every month. This is also the story of immigrants throughout the history of the United States. You see, Peter was my great grandfather. He came to the US from Italy during the mass migration of Southern and Eastern Europeans at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th Century. I truly believe that the story of immigrants today is my story - and it is the story of America.
I am the Regional Coordinator with Justice For Our Neighbors (JFON) in Central Florida. At JFON, we provide free, high quality legal services to low-income immigrants and refugees so that, like my great grandfather did, families can find hope and opportunity that will benefit the generations to come! As the Regional Coordinator for JFON, it is my privilege to meet with pastors, mission leaders, lay leaders, and directors of various ministry and organizations to tell them about the work that we do to serve the immigrants and refugees in their communities. Even more, I share with them about how church communities can get involved in this incredible ministry.
Not only does JFON provide free legal services at our monthly immigration legal service clinics in Orlando and Tampa, but we also provide education to churches, Sunday School classes, small groups, UMW and UMM groups, meetings, and conferences. By educating communities about the issues that immigrants and refugees face, we start a conversation that approaches the issue from a biblical and theological perspective. We believe that the Bible and our faith tradition have a lot to say about welcoming the sojourner, and we believe that the Church has the privilege to serve immigrants and refugees who are in need.
I would love the chance to meet with you and share with you about the work we do at JFON. I look forward to hearing from you!

Congregational Transformation in the EC District By Kim Shockley
As you can probably tell by now, making disciples has always been a passion of mine! I am pleased to be in a place where I can be of assistance to our local churches as they struggle with how we do this in today's world. This month I wanted you to think about two things that are evidence of our disciple-making and then let you know about two up-coming events that will be helpful in your efforts!
The first evidence of making disciples has to do with whether we are talking with our Christian friends about what we are learning and how we are processing our faith and what we are doing differently because of these things. Do you pray more? Are you reading your Bible with a desire to be close to God? Do you notice a difference in how you relate to other people? Are you making a more serious effort to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8) Are you being transformed into a likeness of Christ? Are these things happening with other people in your congregation? [MORE....] |

A Letter of Thanks
From Bishop Hope Morgan Ward to Bishop Timothy Whitaker
As we approach the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on Saturday, August 29, we give thanks for you and for the partnership of the Florida Conference in recovery.
The United Methodist Churches of Florida were here early on and have sustained their interest, generosity and commitment to our long recovery. We continue to remember with deep gratitude the gift of the Florida Conference for new church development in the years following Katrina. Now, four years out, we are seeing harvest from these seeds sown in our midst. We are all deeply grateful for all the ways you have blessed our lives.
Please extend our thanks to the conference staff, mission and UMVIM leaders and the entire conference for their perseverance. Through the connection of The United Methodist Church in response, over 13,000 families are back home in Mississippi.
The work continues and we look forward to seeing many of you as we press on in this good work.

15 Passenger Vans for the Bahamas Conference
The Bahamas conference would like to obtain any 15 passenger vans they can get. Five vans have already been sent and there are requests for three more. The most urgent is for a Haitian church in Nassau with seven hundred members and no transportation. There are three cars among them and one belongs to the pastor. It will be used to transport their people to the doctor, immigration, school church, etc. The Haitians have no money so if a church has any type of transportation to give, it would be deeply appreciated. The other two have about $5,000 and could pay something. However, they have to pay shipping for $1,500 and whatever customs charges them to bring it into the country. Sometimes they let it in free because it is for a church. I doubt they will do if for the Haitians because they don't want them there. There are two shipping lines that will get the vehicles to the Bahamas, one in West Palm and the other in Ft. Lauderdale. I can either come get the van or tell the church how to take them for shipment. Thanks for you help in this project. Contact Gene Zimmerman for further information at eagzimme@yahoo.com. |

Health & Wholeness Ministries
Focus: Alzheimer's and Dementia
There are now 5.3 million people in the US diagnosed with dementia. This means every congregation is impacted by Alzheimer's and other memory and thinking challenges in their members. Though brain stimulation is recommended as a preventive action, many of those suffering from Alzheimer's and related diseases have been very intelligent and had leadership positions in the church and community. A natural consequence of the disease is withdrawing from previous organizations and relationships. So what can the church do to support these people who have been such valuable servants and ministers as they become unseen?
The first step is recognizing that there are at least two people involved - the person with the illness and the caregiver. The disease is progressive so the needs and ability to relate will change over time. Encourage the diagosed person to participate in familiar activities for as long as they can, providing support so they are not embarrassed or in an inappropriate role so their presence becomes an obstacle to the group. The impaired person needs contacts with familiar faces in a comfortable environment. Even if the activities have to be altered, the relationships can continue. Examples include if no longer able to play bridge, [MORE....] |

IMPACT Ministries of Sanlando UMC
Home repair ministry gives youth chance to serve: Putting faith into action
By Mary Lee Downey | Aug. 11, 2009
Chad Garmin is IMPACT Ministries' executive director. He said the organization was founded in 1998 as a home repair ministry of Sanlando United Methodist Church in Longwood in response to the need for organized youth service projects in the area. Garmin said he questioned why groups were going to "North Carolina or Tennessee or even foreign countries to help people do this kind of home repair when there were needs right in our own backyard." The answer, he knew, was that there weren't any organizations providing the logistical services youth groups needed to coordinate such project, and so IMPACT Ministries was born.
The ministry celebrated its 10th anniversary last year and this year received a $4,500 grant from the United Methodist General Board of Discipleship's 2009 Youth Service Fund. The grant will be used to provide scholarships to low-income minority youth who want to participate in the ministry. [MORE...] |
