Dear Friends in Ministry,
While in worship today I couldn’t help but notice the beauty of the sanctuary. The soft warm tones of the woods and carpeting, the beautiful wall hangings, the pews and chairs in such neat order, the lights and screens, the windows that let in the beauty of nature, and the coolness of the air even on a humid morning like today. How comforting and comfortable our places of worship have become. I was reminded of a mission trip to Alaska many years ago where we happened on a Russian Orthodox community and learned that their form of worship involved standing anywhere from one and half to two and a half hours every Sunday. Somehow I can’t imagine our church having much of a congregation if we had to stand for the entire service.
Certainly, the first churches didn’t have any of the comforts we take for granted. How interesting it is when you think about all we put into our places of worship when you consider that the church began not so much as a place but as a movement of the Holy Spirit! A movement that we are still called to fulfill today. God’s calling is not for us to be bound by the confines of our beautiful churches. We are called to move out into the world to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Looking for ways to be a part of the movement? Look no further! Salty Service is just a call or click away! Check out the volunteer/mission activities at your church or go to the FLUMC website at www.flumc2.org and see where you can find a place in this movement of the Spirit called the United Methodist Church!
Blessings, peace, and hope for being moved to move!
