New Church Development - "Fire in the House of the Lord"
by Pastor Daniel Martinez, Casa del Alfarero Church, Kissimmee
The Lord has done great things for us, and we rejoiced. --Psalm 126:3
There is a song that says, “There’s fire in the house of the Lord.” That’s exactly how we feel at Casa del Alfarero for the Lord is working wonders in and through us.
For several years we have prayed for God to send someone to help us start a praise band. We want to have live music and not depend on CD’s anymore. As the farmer who does the work ought to have the first share of the crops, the pastoral family started preparing the field at home from which God would send the rain. As part of the preparation for God’s manifestation, we started piano lessons for our son and drum lessons for our daughter so they could be prepared for when God would give us the blessing. The time came this past July 11 when worshipper and music teacher brother Oscar Calderón and his wife Diana received the call from God to come to help us. They are a godly couple, set up on fire for the Lord. We had no instruments and just a few musicians. The brother who wanted to play the bass declared in faith that God would give him the ability and the gift of music because he had never played an instrument before and he didn’t know anything about musical notes. The sister who wanted to play the guitar, used to play when she was a teenager, but didn’t touch a guitar in many years and didn’t know some of the notes. God gave both of them the ability to play and they were able to play in the starting night just after two weeks of practice. Our son and daughter are also serving on the praise team for we took a step of faith when there was no money for music lessons because we know our God is faithful. It can be frustrating when you have a petition before the Lord for years and nothing happens. But we have to trust that God is never late and that He has the perfect time for everything.
July 11, 2011 marked a great victory in the life of our community of faith for God was giving to us the petition of our heart and many more blessings along with it. Since the group started, we have seen our congregation has been greatly blessed. We have seen an increase in attendance and an overall revival of faith among the people. Our worship services are lasting longer, and when it is time to go home, people stay waiting and literally asking for more. We have more youth and children and God has added to the congregation people willing to help with their time, talents, and abilities and more people are committed to tithing. In the last two months, we have had four professions of faith, three reconciliations, four baptisms, and we are scheduled for more. It is so beautiful to hear the testimonies of our brothers and sisters of what God is doing in them and their families. He is healing, restoring, answering prayers, working in the transformation and renovation of our hearts and minds. He is helping us to be united in the same mind and the same purpose. New church family members have asked for a service at their home during a week night and a great majority of the congregation has supported them. Two weeks ago, we had a youth night with an invited preacher and praise team, and now the youth are asking for the next one. Bible studies are going great! We have a good attendance and we are learning and growing. We are providing food and clothing to the needy and are working on an outreaching event and health fair for October 22.
All this is the work of our mighty God, and as Peter and John said, “For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20). Our 8th Anniversary was on August 31. Certainly we can say, “The Lord has done great things for us, and we rejoiced” (Psalm 126:3). To God is the glory!
New Church Development - "Playing Outside"
By Pastor Jaime Faberlle, Christ to the Nations Church, Orlando
As a child growing up in the town of Carolina, Puerto Rico, the summer months were spent playing outside for hours on end with friends and neighbors. My father could not stand to watch us stay in bed past 7:00 a.m. On most days, after breakfast, we would be strongly urged by him to "go outside and do something." Unbeknownst to both of us, he was providing much needed foundation for my future as a church planter. See, church planting involves a lot of "going outside to do something."
What do I mean by that? In five years of serving as planting pastor of Christ to the Nations Church, I have learned some valuable lessons. First, God has reminded me time after time - ministry that transforms people and their communities, must take place outside of the confines of the church building. The reality is we minister in a time and place when lots of people have grown cynical with regard to the church establishment. In other words, the concept of going to church is no longer appealing to most, forcing us, as Christian leaders to look for alternative ways and places to spread the message of Christ. The message does not need to change. The way it is presented does. Second, it has been pressed upon our hearts that folks need to come together to play, to have fun, to relate to others in an environment that is healthy and loving.
With that in mind, our church's strategy for the summer includes lots of playing outside. On June 15, we kicked off our ministry to the community in two ways. First, we started CHARACTERS, a program in which kids are taught about Christian values in a way that is fun and innovative. The program is seven weeks long and will conclude with a graduation-type ceremony in which each participant will receive a certificate and parents will attend. We solicited and were granted permission to make use of a community hall at Alafaya Palms, a community near the church. A total of 17 children attended our first session and many promised to bring friends in the weeks to come.
Also on June 15 in the evening, we gathered at East Orange Park for an awesome time of kickball, snacks and prayer with community children and their parents. In the weeks leading to the event, hundreds of invitations were handed out to neighboring communities. A total of 52 children participated and had a grand time. This effort too will last for the remainder of June and July. The strategy here is for us to connect with families and to present them with backpacks for school at the end of the summer. These will be presented during home visits to each family by members of Christ to the Nations.
On one occasion the apostle Paul wrote, "I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some." (1 Co. 9:22) This is the reality that has the staff and members of our church playing outside. Will you join us?
I thank God for the support of the Office of New Church Development and can't wait to write about how the next two months will unfold as we faithfully endeavor to be used by God in leading many to a life-transforming relationship with Jesus.

New Church Development: " Casa de Paz UMC Highlights "
by Pastor Jose Nieves
What makes your father proud of you? If you are one of the elementary students that participate in one of the three All Pro Dad Breakfasts that Casa de Paz UMC host every month, you do not have to wonder. Following the program founded by Tony Dungy, former Colts coach, Casa de Paz UMC host 40-50 dads plus their children for breakfast before school starts. Each session starts with fathers sharing with other fathers at their table why they are proud of their children and with children smiling from ear to ear. The program also includes games and discussion starters for farther and their children. This provides the ministry of the church an incredible setting for relationship and outreach to take place. This is just of one of the many ways that NCD churches are helping rethink what church is all about.
